Qing Ming from Punggol: Columbaria, Cemeteries and Getting There

People at Punggol bus interchange during sunset.

Qing Ming Day 2026 was 5 April, and NEA treated 21 March to 19 April 2026 as the peak visiting period. Third-party calendars give 5 April 2027 for Qing Ming 2027; check live, as NEA had not announced its 2027 arrangements as of October 2026. From Punggol, plan a weekday visit outside the peak days.

Remembering family deserves time and quiet. Sort out the shuttle or parking beforehand, and you can clean, pray and talk together without rushing.

This page is part of eduKate Punggol’s When You Need Help in Punggol, our practical guides for life’s occasions, big and small. It covers the dates, the NEA columbaria and cemetery, the Buddhist columbarium at Fo Guang Shan in Punggol, getting there without a car, and the rules on burning and offerings.

Quick answer

  • Dates: in 2026 NEA named 11 peak days between 21 March and 19 April: Good Friday (3 April) and every weekend in that window. For 2027, third-party calendars give Qing Ming as 5 April 2027 (check live), and Good Friday is Friday 26 March 2027.
  • Best time to go: a weekday inside the Qing Ming period, away from the weekends and Good Friday.
  • Without a car: on peak days in 2026, NEA ran free shuttles from Khatib MRT to Mandai Columbarium and from Yew Tee MRT to Choa Chu Kang Columbarium.
  • Driving: in 2026, drivers to Choa Chu Kang and Mandai columbaria booked a parking e-appointment with Singpass for set dates and times.
  • In Punggol: Fo Guang Shan Singapore at 1 Punggol Place offers urn placement and memorial tablets.
  • Help: NEA Contact Centre 6225 5632 (24 hours). For a medical emergency, call 995.

How to Plan a Qing Ming Visit from Punggol

The government sites are NEA’s columbaria at Choa Chu Kang, Mandai and Yishun, and the cemetery at Choa Chu Kang. These steps follow NEA’s 2026 advice.

  1. Watch for NEA’s advisory. The 2026 advisory came out on 25 February 2026, with the peak dates, shuttle details and booking links. The 2027 advisory had not been published as of October 2026; based on 2026, look for it from late February 2027.
  2. Pick a weekday. NEA asks visitors to come outside the peak days if they can, and weekdays are the easy way to do that.
  3. Plan the train ride. From Punggol, take the North East Line to an interchange with the North-South Line, then ride to Khatib for Mandai or Yew Tee for Choa Chu Kang. Check a journey planner for the quickest route on the day.
  4. Catch the free shuttle on peak days. In 2026 both shuttles ran 7am to 5pm. Mandai’s ran every 15 minutes; Choa Chu Kang’s ran every 30 minutes, and every 15 minutes from 9am to 2pm.
  5. If you drive, book parking first. In 2026, e-appointments for Choa Chu Kang and Mandai came in two-hour slots, and bookings opened at 10am on Monday 9 March. No booking was needed for public transport users or drop-offs.
  6. Pack sensibly. Bring offerings, water for the journey, an umbrella and shoes with a good grip. Remember that eating and drinking are not allowed inside NEA columbarium premises.
  7. Clear up before you leave. Burn joss paper only in the designated burners, never leave a candle or joss stick burning unattended, and take uneaten offerings home.

Which Situation Fits You

You are going by public transport

The free peak-day shuttles are the easiest option. In 2026 the Mandai shuttle also stopped at bus stop B48149 on Mandai Avenue. Allow plenty of time for the cross-island journey from Punggol, and aim to finish before the shuttles stop (5pm in 2026).

You are driving

Book the e-appointment and show the confirmation email or your NRIC to traffic wardens. In 2026, cars entered Mandai only via the Mandai Lake Flyover along Mandai Road, not from Mandai Avenue. At Choa Chu Kang, the entrance was from Old Choa Chu Kang Road via Cemetery Central Street 25. Chinese Cemetery Path 4 was closed to vehicles other than shuttles and authorised or emergency vehicles, and vehicles over 2,500kg unladen were barred.

You are taking a taxi or being dropped off

Drop-offs need no booking. In 2026, taxis and private-hire cars dropped visitors near the pedestrian gate on Mandai Avenue for Mandai, and at Carpark E for Choa Chu Kang.

You are bringing elderly relatives

Choose a weekday morning, keep to paths and take rests. NEA warns of potholes and uneven ground at Choa Chu Kang, and advises sheltering at the pavilions if a thunderstorm comes. Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery lends wheelchairs at the Venerable Hong Choon Memorial Hall.

Your loved one rests at Fo Guang Shan in Punggol

You can stay close to home. Bus 50 stops opposite Punggol View Primary School (stop 65359), and the temple runs a free shuttle from the Punggol MRT taxi stand on Sunday mornings. Fo Guang Shan lists annual prayer services, chanting for the deceased and a year-end ancestor ceremony, so ask at the service counter about its Qing Ming arrangements.

This is your first Qing Ming after a loss

Be gentle with yourself and go when you feel ready. If ashes were scattered inland, note that in 2026 NEA’s Garden of Peace and Garden of Serenity were closed on the 11 peak days, except to next-of-kin with an approved scattering schedule. Our guide to when someone dies in Punggol covers the earlier steps.

Rules and Costs at Columbaria

NEA’s 2026 rules at its columbaria:

  • Burn joss paper only in the designated burners and pits, in small quantities.
  • Never leave lit candles, joss sticks or joss paper unattended.
  • Unattended offerings and litter are cleared away.
  • No pets, and no eating or drinking in columbarium premises.
  • No gifts or red packets for staff.

Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery allows only vegetarian food, fruit or flowers as offerings, with no alcohol or meat on its premises. Joss paper boxes may not be burnt during the Qing Ming period, and plastic must come off before anything goes into the eco-burner. Its 2026 Qing Ming prayer on 5 April had tablet categories at $320 and $100, both fully registered.

NEA’s shuttles are free. NEA cuts the grass in common areas but not on individual graves, and third-party grave services are unregulated, so do not pay anyone you did not arrange with beforehand. At Choa Chu Kang Chinese Cemetery, NEA’s 2026 guide shows Phase 9 exhumation under way; claim registration closed on 30 April 2026, and NEA warns families to beware of unregulated exhumation offers.

Neighbour’s Tips

  • Save the NEA Contact Centre number, 6225 5632. It answers 24 hours.
  • Note the niche or grave location on your phone, with a photo of the block or path sign. It saves a long search next year.
  • Night visits are possible while the columbaria open 24 hours, but NEA asks visitors to take extra care.
  • Bring a small bag for rubbish and take everything home, including food offerings, which NEA clears if left behind.
  • Watch the little ones. NEA reminds visitors to watch children and elderly relatives and to keep to the paths.
  • Stay hydrated on the journey, and drink outside the columbarium buildings rather than inside.
  • Agree a meeting point at the shuttle stop in case the family splits up in the crowd.

If It’s Urgent or Gets Worse

Call 995 if anyone collapses, falls badly or shows signs of heat illness. Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery had first-aid volunteers on standby on peak weekends in 2026. Call 995 for any fire that spreads beyond a burner. For other problems at an NEA site, call the NEA Contact Centre on 6225 5632.

If someone approaches you with an offer you did not ask for, such as grave work or exhumation help, walk away and check with NEA first. NEA’s advisory also lists the ScamShield Helpline, 1799, for scam questions.
