Pregnancy Loss and Stillbirth: Support for Punggol Families

Seating and rest area at Punggol Waterway Park beside Waterway Point

If there is heavy bleeding, severe pain or collapse in pregnancy, call 995. For early pregnancy bleeding or pain, KKH’s Urgent O&G Centre takes walk-ins 24 hours a day. After a pregnancy loss, Punggol families can call Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) on 1767 at any hour, and ask KKH for a medical social worker.

We are so sorry. However early or late it happened, this is a real loss, and you do not have to carry it alone.

This page is part of eduKate Punggol’s When You Need Help in Punggol, our practical guides for life’s occasions, big and small. It covers where to go for urgent care, what doctors at KKH say about miscarriage, what happens after a stillbirth, leave and practical arrangements, and where to find support in the weeks that follow.

Quick answer

  • Heavy bleeding, severe pain or collapse: call 995, or go to the nearest emergency department.
  • Someone to talk to, any hour: SOS on 1767, or CareText on WhatsApp at 9151 1767. The national mindline is 1771. All run 24 hours.
  • Under 22 weeks with bleeding or pain: KKH Urgent O&G Centre, a 24-hour walk-in centre at Basement 1, Women’s Tower, 100 Bukit Timah Road.
  • 22 weeks or more, with bleeding, leaking fluid or signs of labour: go straight to the KKH Delivery Suite, Level 2, Women’s Tower.
  • Nearest hospital to Punggol: Sengkang General Hospital has no inpatient O&G service. In an emergency it stabilises patients and may transfer them to KKH.
  • After a stillbirth: registration is automatic and free. Download the digital certificate from LifeSG within 30 days.

Pregnancy Loss: What to Do First

If you are reading this while it is happening, start at the top. You do not need to do everything at once.

  1. If bleeding is heavy or pain is severe, call 995. KKH advises immediate medical attention at its Urgent O&G Centre or the nearest emergency department for severe bleeding or severe abdominal pain.
  2. Under 22 weeks, with bleeding or pain, go to KKH’s Urgent O&G Centre. It is a 24-hour walk-in centre for early pregnancy problems. Since 4 May 2026, KKH also offers online booking at for.sg/uogc-booking, with slots opening 48 hours ahead. Walk-ins continue.
  3. Under 16 weeks, with minimal bleeding or mild pain, or if you want reassurance, call 6294 4050 for KKH’s Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit. It sees patients by appointment on the same or next working day, and a visit can take two to three hours.
  4. At 22 weeks or more, with bleeding, leaking fluid or signs of labour, go directly to the KKH Delivery Suite on Level 2 of the Women’s Tower.
  5. Bring your ID and, if you can, someone you trust. Your NRIC, FIN or passport may be needed, and KKH is a long way from Punggol.
  6. Ask for a medical social worker while you are still at KKH. They can help with arrangements and refer you for counselling.
  7. Know the warning signs once you are home. KKH says fever or a foul-smelling discharge needs immediate medical attention, and if bleeding increases or pain worsens, return for review.

Checked October 2026 — confirm on the official page before you go: KKH Urgent O&G Centre, KKH pregnancy loss resources and SOS contact page.

As of October 2026, KKH’s resources page shows an older SOS number. SOS’s own website gives 1767 as its current 24-hour hotline, so please use that.

Which Situation Fits You

An early miscarriage

KKH says miscarriage in the first trimester happens in up to one in five pregnancies, and in most cases no cause is found. About half of early miscarriages are linked to chromosome problems. KKH is clear that food, stress, exercise, work, travel and intercourse do not cause miscarriage. Your doctor will talk you through the options, which may be waiting for nature to take its course, medication, or a minor procedure. KKH notes that most miscarriages are one-off events.

A stillbirth

ICA says a stillbirth is registered automatically once a doctor certifies it online. You show your NRIC, FIN or passport to the doctor or hospital. If the system is down, the doctor issues a paper Confirmation of Stillbirth. You then download the digital stillbirth certificate from the LifeSG website within 30 days, using the certificate number, the mother’s ID number and the date. If you would like to name your baby, you can apply for a commemorative birth certificate at go.gov.sg/ica-cbc.

For partners

KKH notes that partners may grieve differently, and encourages couples to talk openly and avoid blaming each other. One of you may want to talk; the other may want to keep busy. Both are normal.

Saying goodbye

KKH suggests ways to remember your baby: choosing a name, keeping a memory box with ultrasound scans, photos, and hand and footprints, or writing a letter or poem. There is no right way, and no deadline.

Making arrangements

ICA says the Confirmation of Stillbirth is accepted by NEA and Town Councils for funeral, burial or cremation applications. If you have difficulty using it for a Permit to Bury or Cremate, call NEA on 6225 5632, which ICA describes as NEA’s 24-hour hotline. NEA’s columbarium bookings accept a Stillbirth Certificate or a hospital memo for a foetus. Your medical social worker can help with the steps.

Leave, Fees and Paperwork

  • Stillbirth registration and certificate: free.
  • Maternity leave after a stillbirth: MOM says you are eligible for full maternity leave if the child is stillborn or dies shortly after birth.
  • After a miscarriage: MOM says maternity leave does not apply, but you can take sick leave to recover. Paternity leave also does not apply to miscarriages.
  • Next pregnancy: for Government-Paid Maternity Leave, a stillbirth counts towards benefits for your next delivery if the criteria were met.
  • NEA fees for a child under 10: cremation at a government crematorium is $50. Burial is $140 for citizens and PRs at the Choa Chu Kang religious cemeteries for Muslim, Ahmadiyya, Jewish, Parsi and Bahai burials, $420 at other government cemeteries, and $940 for non-citizens and non-PRs.
  • Columbarium niche: $500 standard or $900 family.

NEA’s crematoria and Choa Chu Kang Cemetery offices open Monday to Sunday, 8.30am to 4.30pm, closed for lunch from 1pm to 2pm. Cremation needs a death confirmation, a Permit to Cremate and the next of kin’s ID, plus a Letter of Authorisation if someone else applies for you.

Gentle Tips for the Days Ahead

  • Save two numbers now: KKH on 6294 4050 and SOS on 1767.
  • Ask a friend to drive or come with you. The trip from Punggol to Bukit Timah Road is long when you are frightened.
  • Keep your own copy of the stillbirth certificate. Download it from LifeSG within 30 days and save it to your phone and email.
  • Let someone else make the work call. A partner or friend can tell your employer and ask about leave.
  • Accept specific help. When neighbours ask what they can do, say “dinner on Thursday” or “fetch our son from school”. It helps them and you.
  • Keep something small. A scan photo, a hospital band or a blanket can mean more than you expect later on.
  • Grieve at your own pace. KKH says there is no time limit for grieving.

If You Need Help Right Now

Call 995 for heavy bleeding, severe pain or collapse. If you develop a fever or a foul-smelling discharge after a miscarriage, get medical attention straight away; KKH notes that infection of the womb is rare but can be very serious.

If grief feels unbearable, or you have thoughts of harming yourself, call SOS on 1767 or message CareText on 9151 1767, any time of day or night. The national mindline on 1771 is also open 24 hours. If you are in immediate danger, call 995.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I go if I start bleeding in early pregnancy?

KKH’s Urgent O&G Centre is open 24 hours for walk-ins for problems under 22 weeks. For heavy bleeding or severe pain, call 995 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Can I go to Sengkang General Hospital?

In an emergency, the nearest emergency department will help. Sengkang General Hospital has no inpatient O&G service, and says O&G patients may be transferred to KKH after stabilisation.

Registration happens automatically once a doctor certifies the stillbirth online. You only need to download the free digital certificate from LifeSG within 30 days.

Can I take maternity leave?

After a stillbirth, MOM says you are eligible for full maternity leave. After a miscarriage, you can take sick leave to recover.

Will it happen again?

KKH says most miscarriages are one-off events. After three or more, a specialist review may be advised, so talk to your doctor.
