Bed Bugs in Your Punggol Flat: Signs, Treatment and Stopping the Spread

Walkway at Parc Centros condominium in Punggol

If you think there are bed bugs in your Punggol flat, look for live bugs, reddish-brown streaks or stains on the mattress, shed brown shells and a sweet, musty smell. Then contact a pest management company early, as NEA and HealthHub advise. NEA says bed bugs are not known to transmit diseases to humans.

Finding bed bugs is upsetting, and many families feel embarrassed. Try not to: they travel in luggage and second-hand furniture, and with the right help they can be dealt with.

This page is part of eduKate Punggol’s When You Need Help in Punggol, our practical guides for life’s occasions, big and small. It covers how to recognise bed bugs, what to do in the first days, finding a pest company, looking after bites, and stopping them from spreading.

Quick answer

  • Signs: live bugs from 1mm (young) to 10mm (adult), black, brown or maroon; reddish-brown streaks on mattresses; stains from droppings; shed brown shells; a sweet, musty odour.
  • First step: engage a pest management company early. NEA publishes a list of companies that provide bed bug management.
  • At home: wash clothes and dry them at high heat, since HealthHub says bed bugs die above 50°C. Do not rely on vacuuming alone.
  • Bites: itchy clusters of red bumps. See a doctor if symptoms worsen or last more than five days, and call 995 for a severe allergic reaction such as breathing difficulty.
  • Cost: there is no official price guide. Ask for a written treatment plan and quote before work starts.

What to Do First About Bed Bugs

  1. Look closely where they hide. NEA says bed bugs hide in sleeping areas, behind picture frames and inside mattress pads. Use a torch along mattress seams and the bed frame.
  2. Take clear photos. Photos of bugs, shells or stains help a pest company judge what you are dealing with.
  3. Call a pest management company early. NEA advises premises with an infestation to engage one, and HealthHub says to contact a licensed pest control company early.
  4. Wash and dry fabrics at high heat. HealthHub says clothes can be washed and dried at high heat, and that bed bugs die at temperatures above 50°C. It gives no specific wash setting, so follow the care labels on your clothes and bedding.
  5. Do not rely on the vacuum. HealthHub warns that vacuuming alone may not resolve an infestation.
  6. Hold on to the mattress for now. HealthHub asks that infested mattresses and furniture are treated and properly disposed of before you throw them away.
  7. Look after the bites. Try not to scratch. HealthHub says heavy scratching can lead to infection, scarring or darker patches of skin.

Which Situation Fits You

You have just come back from a trip

HealthHub suggests placing your luggage far from the bed and washing the clothes from your trip immediately after you return. Unpack in the bathroom or kitchen rather than on the bed. Our overseas trip checklist is a good place to add this habit.

You bought or were given second-hand furniture

HealthHub’s advice is not to bring home second-hand furniture, especially upholstered items. If you must, inspect and clean it thoroughly before it comes into your home.

A child has bites

HealthHub describes bed bug bites as extremely itchy clusters of red bumps. A doctor may not be needed unless the symptoms worsen or last more than five days, so keep an eye on them and help your child avoid scratching. Call 995 if there are signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as breathing difficulty or a swollen face.

You rent a room or a flat

Tell the flat owner or main tenant as soon as you see signs, and share your photos, so the pest company can inspect every room rather than just yours. Keep your own luggage and laundry contained until the treatment is planned.

You suspect the corridor or a neighbour’s flat

Pests in common areas such as corridors and bin chutes are a Town Council matter; our pests in common areas guide explains who to call. Inside a neighbour’s flat, treatment is for their household to arrange, so a quiet, kind word is the best start.

You need to throw out a mattress

Have it treated first, as HealthHub asks, so the bugs do not travel to the bin centre or a neighbour’s home. Our bulky waste guide explains disposal. Punggol Town Council’s website also lists a bulky refuse removal service; check it live for how it works.

Bed Bugs Treatment: Costs and Rules

There are no official figures for treatment costs. What NEA does describe is the usual approach: a control plan that mixes non-chemical and chemical methods, such as vacuuming, hot laundering, steam and heat treatment, removing hiding places, and insecticides. Ask each company which of these it will use, how many visits are included, and what you need to do to prepare.

  • Licensing: NEA says only companies registered as Vector Control Operators can be engaged for vector control works. Its April 2026 circular names mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, rats and rat fleas as the vectors covered. Bed bugs are not on that list, so a bed bug firm is not necessarily NEA-registered.
  • What to look for instead: NEA keeps a list of companies providing bed bug management, and HealthHub advises using a licensed pest control company. Ask the firm about its experience with bed bugs and its credentials before you agree.
  • Inside or outside: HDB’s MyNiceHome guide says the Town Council is responsible for the areas outside your flat, so treatment inside your home is yours to arrange.

Neighbour’s Tips

  • Make the suitcase rule a habit. Bags go nowhere near the bed after a trip, and travel clothes go straight into the wash.
  • Check the frames. NEA lists picture frames among the hiding places, so look behind the ones near your beds, not just under the mattress.
  • Be wary of free sofas. HealthHub singles out second-hand upholstered furniture. A bargain is not worth an infestation.
  • Get two or three quotes. Without an official price guide, comparing a few firms from NEA’s list helps you judge what is fair.
  • Keep perspective. Bed bugs are miserable, but NEA is clear that they are not known to transmit diseases to humans, and they are manageable.

If It’s Urgent or Gets Worse

Bed bugs are not an emergency in themselves. Call 995 if anyone has a severe allergic reaction, such as breathing difficulty or facial swelling; MOH lists severe breathing difficulty as a life-threatening emergency.

For non-urgent advice about bites, call NurseFirst on 6262 6262. See a GP if the symptoms worsen or persist after more than five days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are bed bugs dangerous?

NEA says they are not known to transmit diseases to humans. Bites can be very itchy and cause allergic reactions in some people, and heavy scratching can lead to infection.

How do I know if I have bed bugs?

HealthHub says spotting live bed bugs is the tell-tale sign. Other clues are reddish-brown streaks on the mattress, stains from droppings, shed brown shells and a sweet, musty smell.

Does a bed bug company need to be licensed by NEA?

NEA’s April 2026 circular on vector control licensing names mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, rats and rat fleas; bed bugs are not on that list. Use NEA’s list of companies that provide bed bug management, and ask about credentials.

Can I get rid of bed bugs myself?

Hot washing and drying helps, but NEA advises engaging a pest management company, and HealthHub warns that vacuuming alone may not resolve an infestation.

Should I throw away my mattress?

Not straight away. HealthHub asks that infested mattresses and furniture are treated and properly disposed of, so ask your pest company first.

When should I see a doctor about bites?

HealthHub says a doctor may not be needed unless symptoms worsen or persist after more than five days. Call 995 for breathing difficulty or facial swelling.
