History of Punggol Periwinkle Community Garden: Television and Gold Recognition in 2007–2008

Three students in school uniforms work through open books at a classroom table, with textbooks and stationery nearby and study notes on the whiteboard behind them.

Punggol Periwinkle’s community garden was documented between Blocks 197A and 197B in an account by its Residents’ Committee chairman, David Chian. His message connects the garden with television filming in 2007 and Gold recognition in 2008.

The chairman reported that a MediaCorp programme called Way To Go filmed at the garden in March 2007. He also recorded a Gold award in NParks’ Community in Bloom competition the following year.

This is a local participant’s account of the garden, not an independently reconstructed awards register. It nevertheless preserves specific names, dates and a location for researching Periwinkle’s early community life.

CHAPTER 1 OF 2

1. What the Residents’ Committee account preserves

Back to contents

The chairman’s message says Periwinkle RC was formally established in January 2007. The garden appears within that broader account of residents getting to know one another.

He describes filming centred on a red-coloured amaranth grown in the garden and says the segment was subsequently shown on Channel U.

The same message records the 2008 Gold award. These statements should be attributed to the RC account rather than presented as details verified directly against the broadcaster’s schedule or an original competition results sheet.

Importantly, January 2007 is the stated formation date of the committee. The message does not explicitly establish it as the garden’s founding month.

CHAPTER 2 OF 2

2. Keeping neighbourhood histories distinct

Back to contents

Periwinkle’s story is easy to blur with other Punggol gardens because the same broad themes recur: residents, plants, awards and social activity. The block location and named source keep this account specific.

The television episode also shows why a garden may leave traces outside gardening records. A broadcast listing, a newspaper clipping or an old photograph can preserve details that a present-day map cannot.

For residents researching their own memories, the next useful evidence would be the original programme segment or dated photographs from the garden.

The surviving message establishes a place to begin. It shows how an ordinary shared plot became something its organisers wanted to celebrate and remember, without supplying a complete year-by-year history.
