Punggol Plant Identification | How to Use NParks Flora Fauna Web

Plant identification in Punggol becomes easier when you bring home observations instead of only a guessed name. NParks Flora Fauna Web helps you compare those observations with plant descriptions and photographs.

The portal is a reference for plants and animals, not a live map promising where you will find every species. Use it to learn what a plant is, then check local information separately.

This eduKatePunggol guide shows a simple process: observe one plant, search a possible name, compare several features and keep uncertainty visible.

CHAPTER 1 OF 4

1. Know what the reference can tell you

Back to contents

NParks explains Flora Fauna Web as a portal covering plants grown in the region and animals found in Singapore, with photographs, descriptions and learning resources.

It includes cultivated plants as well as native ones. A species record should not be read as a claim that the plant grows wild in Punggol.

Open the Flora Fauna Web portal when you have time to compare carefully. You can enjoy your walk first and do the reference work afterwards.

Choose one question to answer, such as whether your candidate name matches the leaf shape. A small question is easier to resolve than what are all the plants in this park?

2. Collect useful observations on the walk

Back to contents

Record the date and the general public location, then describe what is visible. Is the plant a tree, shrub or low-growing plant? What shape are its leaves?

Take a wider photograph for context and another showing details you can reach from the path. Avoid pulling leaves, collecting fruit or stepping into planting beds to improve the image.

Colour alone is a weak starting point. Many plants have green leaves and similar-looking flowers; arrangement, shape and several features together make a better comparison.

Our Punggol nature-journaling guide helps you separate what you saw from what you think it means.

3. Search a candidate and test it

Back to contents

If a sign provides a name, copy it accurately. Search that name in the portal and compare the description with your own photographs.

If you have only a suggested name, treat it as a candidate. A confident suggestion from a friend or an image tool still needs checking.

The similar-looking plant comparison resources can help when two candidates seem close. They are particularly useful for learning which details distinguish lookalikes.

You may discover that the feature you need is not visible in your photograph. Write down that gap and look again on another walk rather than declaring the problem solved.

4. Turn the answer into neighbourhood knowledge

Back to contents

Keep the common name and scientific name together when the record provides them. Add two visible features that helped you make the identification.

For mapped tree positions, use our TreesSG Punggol guide. The two resources do different jobs: location clues and species information can support each other.

Do not use an identification exercise as permission to taste a plant or try a medicinal use. A nature notebook is for observation and learning.

Revisit the plant and see whether you can recognise it without opening the reference immediately. That small moment of recognition makes an ordinary Punggol walk more interesting.
