Punggol Lightning Alerts: Check Your Location in MSS and myENV

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

Punggol residents can check detected lightning through MSS’s Lightning Information Service and the myENV app. MSS says the information is updated in near real time and shows detected cloud-to-cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning.

Location-specific alerts can be configured for detected lightning or a forecast of thundery showers within the selected area. MSS’s FAQ describes alerting distances of 6–8 kilometres around the chosen location.

For a Punggol waterway or coastal outing, choose the place where you will actually be, not only your home address. The alert distance is not a guaranteed safety boundary: MSS explains that lightning can affect a location more than 10 kilometres from a thunderstorm cloud.

Check the selected location

As practical preparation, review the place monitored by the service before leaving home. A saved location from another outing may not represent the stretch of Punggol you intend to visit.

If several people rely on one person’s alerts, agree who will check the updates. Do not assume everybody has enabled the same location.

MSS’s guidance distinguishes detected lightning from a forecast of thundery showers. Read the notification and current display rather than interpreting every alert as a strike at your exact position.

Check the time and map context. A forwarded alert without its time or selected location is incomplete information for deciding what to do next.

Keep alerts separate from a safety guarantee

A configured ring is an information feature, not a promise that places outside it are safe. The official weather-systems page explains the risk of lightning from a distant storm.

Do not continue an exposed outing merely because your phone is silent. Consult current official lightning-safety guidance and respond to developing conditions rather than treating an app as permission to proceed.

Before a walk or ride, agree how the outdoor activity will be stopped or postponed if thunderstorm conditions develop. Keep the group together when changing plans.

Use the Punggol two-hour forecast guide alongside lightning information. The two services answer related but different questions.
