How much outdoor play should a Punggol preschool provide? ECDA says regular outdoor activities are required to support active learning and children’s physical well-being.
For full-day programmes, ECDA states one hour of gross motor activities daily, including at least 30 minutes outdoors. For half-day programmes, it states 30 minutes of gross motor activities three times weekly, with at least one session outdoors.
Infant care has separate guidance: preschools should provide a 15-to-30-minute outdoor experience once a week for infants aged six months and above. Ask how your child’s particular programme puts the relevant guidance into practice.

CHAPTER 1 OF 4
Check the programme category
Use the ECDA outdoor play answer for the full-day and half-day guidance. Do not treat a daily full-day figure as the half-day schedule.
The separate infant outdoor experience answer identifies its age range and frequency.
CHAPTER 2 OF 4
Ask to see the routine
A useful question is: “Where do gross motor and outdoor activities appear in my child’s programme?” Ask teachers to explain the usual routine.
Gross motor activities involve large-body movement. You can ask what children do during those sessions and how the activities suit their age.
CHAPTER 3 OF 4
Discuss practical arrangements
Ask where outdoor activities take place, how children are supervised, and how plans are adjusted when conditions are unsuitable.
These are questions for the centre, not promises that every preschool uses the same outdoor space or contingency arrangement.
CHAPTER 4 OF 4
Use the answer when choosing
Consider the explanation alongside the daily routine, teacher communication and your child’s needs. A centre visit can help you ask more specific questions.
If you cannot understand how the timetable meets the relevant guidance, ask the principal for clarification rather than drawing a conclusion from one observed session.
