Punggol Waterway Day took place on 20 March 2016 to mark World Water Day, observed internationally on 22 March. Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean addressed the celebration.
The programme brought kayaking, cycling and walking to the waterway. It records how residents used the completed waterfront as a community gathering place.
The event coincided with the ABC Waters Programme’s tenth anniversary. It was a community celebration, rather than the opening of Punggol Waterway.

The PMO speech record names Pasir Ris–Punggol GRC and community partners as organisers.
The Singapore Canoe Federation supported kayaking for over a hundred residents. Firefly Connections organised a 20-kilometre cycle with around 350 participants; the PA Brisk Walkers Club organised a two-kilometre walk with more than 500.
These are figures reported for that event. They should not be added into an unduplicated attendance total, because the speech does not establish whether participants overlapped.
The speech linked water conservation with Lee Kuan Yew’s water legacy, identifying Punggol Waterway as an ABC Waters example.
The tenth anniversary concerned the national programme, not the age of Punggol Waterway.

Historical interpretation: The celebration offers evidence of a different phase in the waterway’s life. Contracts document how it was built; organised walks, cycling and kayaking document how people were invited to gather around it.
The separate activities also gave residents different ways to take part. A local history can therefore include organisers and participants alongside planners and engineers, showing how a public landscape acquires social meaning.
