If a school-fee GIRO deduction fails, check the bill, bank transaction record and status of the GIRO arrangement. MOE’s general GIRO guidance says an unpaid amount is added to the following month’s bill for another deduction. Punggol parents should confirm the current instructions before making a separate payment.
Ensure the correct account can cover the outstanding amount as well as the next bill. If you changed banks, closed an account or recently applied for GIRO, ask whether the arrangement is active. A submitted application is different from a completed deduction.
Repeated failure or financial difficulty needs a conversation with the school’s general office. This guide explains how to identify the issue, avoid an unnecessary duplicate payment and ask about assistance without treating another organisation’s GIRO rules as MOE’s rules.

CHAPTER 1 OF 5
Confirm which deduction failed
Read the payment notice and match its date and reference to the bank record. A school bill may include more than one charge, so establish what the attempted deduction covered before disputing the amount.
MOE’s general GIRO information explains the arrangements for school-related deductions. Use it with the current bill and school instructions rather than apply a tax, housing or insurance GIRO schedule.
If the bank notification is unclear, ask the bank whether the debit was rejected, pending or completed. Then ask the school which amount remains outstanding. These are related questions, but the bank and school hold different records.
CHAPTER 2 OF 5
Check the account and arrangement
Confirm that the linked account is open and that sufficient funds were available when the deduction was attempted. Ask the bank about any rejected transaction or account restriction shown in its records.
If you recently changed payment details, ask the school whether the new arrangement has taken effect and how to settle any bill during the transition. Avoid assuming that applying online cancels or replaces an existing arrangement immediately.
Check the current deduction date in the official notice. Dates can depend on working days and the applicable payment arrangement. A reminder a few days before the expected debit can make the account check easier to remember.
CHAPTER 3 OF 5
Understand the next bill
MOE’s published guidance says an unsuccessful deduction is added to the next month’s bill for another GIRO attempt. This can make the next total larger than the normal monthly amount.
Greendale Secondary’s financial guidance also describes carrying an insufficient-funds deduction into the next month. Follow your child’s school’s current instructions, especially after repeated failed deductions.
Calculate the amount needed from the actual bill rather than simply doubling a remembered monthly fee. Additional charges, credits or assistance may affect the outstanding total.
CHAPTER 4 OF 5
Clarify a separate payment before making it
If you want to pay another way, ask the school for the amount, payment reference and accepted method. Confirm whether a further GIRO attempt is already scheduled and how the separate payment will be reflected.
Keep the receipt and check the next bill. If the balance appears unchanged, contact the school with the payment date and reference. Do not repeatedly pay the same amount while waiting for records to update.
Use the contact details on the school’s official page or bill. Provide transaction evidence through its designated channel, keeping unrelated account information out of screenshots.
CHAPTER 5 OF 5
Ask for help when the issue is affordability
If the family cannot cover the bill, tell the school promptly and ask about the assistance applicable to the child’s circumstances. Resolving a payment-method problem and requesting financial support are different tasks.
Our MOE financial assistance application guide explains how to prepare and track an enquiry. The school can advise on current eligibility and other support.
For broader context, read our school fees guide. Close the loop by confirming the outstanding balance, active payment arrangement and next required action.
