Broken Personal Learning Device: A Punggol Parent’s Guide to PLD Repair

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

If your child’s personal learning device is broken, contact the school’s ICT support team and follow its PLD repair procedure. Punggol parents should check the school’s instructions before taking a school-purchased laptop or tablet to a repair shop.

PLD warranty and insurance cover depend on the device, purchase year and bundle. A cracked screen, failed keyboard and lost accessory may have different outcomes. Ask for confirmation of coverage and any charges before authorising a repair.

Tell the teacher promptly if the broken learning device prevents homework or classroom participation. Ask about temporary access while repairs are arranged, and protect saved work where possible. A loan device, repair deadline or free replacement should not be assumed.

CHAPTER 1 OF 5

Describe the fault clearly

Record the model, serial number and a short description of what happened. Distinguish physical damage from an account problem, an app that will not open or a device that will not charge. Photograph visible damage if it helps explain the issue.

Tell ICT staff what troubleshooting has already been attempted. Avoid repeatedly resetting the device when you are unsure whether important files have been saved elsewhere.

CHAPTER 2 OF 5

Use your own school’s repair route

Check the latest school PLD notice for the reporting contact, submission arrangements and approved service route. Ask whether to bring the charger or other accessories and how receipt of the device will be acknowledged.

As a school-specific example, Ngee Ann Secondary’s PLD guide directs students to its ICT helpdesk first and explains its servicing arrangements. Punggol families must use their own school’s procedure; collection days and support locations are not interchangeable.

CHAPTER 3 OF 5

Check coverage before agreeing to charges

The same official example shows why purchase year matters: its iPad coverage differs for devices purchased from 2026 onwards, and accessory protection differs from device protection. These terms are specific to that bundle.

For your child’s device, ask which warranty or insurance provision applies, whether a service fee is payable, and whether a claim affects remaining coverage. Keep the diagnosis, quotation and approval record together so later questions can be answered.

CHAPTER 4 OF 5

Plan for files and missed work

Repairs or troubleshooting may involve wiping a device. Ask ICT staff how to protect accessible schoolwork before handing it over. Do not assume that every locally stored file has synchronised to cloud storage.

Give the teacher the affected assignment names and due dates. Ask whether a school device, another permitted device or an alternative task is available. Arrange an agreed plan rather than letting incomplete online work accumulate without explanation.

CHAPTER 5 OF 5

Check the repaired or replacement device

On collection, test charging, the screen, keyboard and the original fault. Ask whether a replacement serial number needs to be recorded and whether school management software and apps must be restored.

Before the next home learning session, verify the child can sign in, open the relevant assignment and save work. Keep the service report and raise any unresolved problem through the school’s stated support channel.
