Mathematics Tuition in Punggol | Complementary vs Supplementary Angles After PSLE — 90° or 180°?

Canal and bridge at Punggol Waterway Park beside Waterway Point

Complementary and supplementary angles after PSLE is a useful post-PSLE Mathematics bridge because Secondary 1 asks students to understand relationships, not only remember procedures.

The wider route begins with After PSLE — Should My Child Start Secondary 1 Maths Early?. The aim is to repair one important connection at a time without turning the holiday into a race.

At eduKatePunggol, Mathematics is taught in focused small groups of up to three students in 1.5-hour lessons near Punggol MRT.

The short answer: complementary angles total 90°, supplementary angles total 180°

Two angles are complementary when their measures add to 90°. Two angles are supplementary when their measures add to 180°.

The words sound similar, so attach each one to a total and a picture instead of memorising vocabulary in isolation.

Complementary angles: think right angle

A right angle measures 90°. If one angle is 35°, its complement is 90° – 35° = 55°.

The two angles do not have to be adjacent. Complementarity is a relationship between measures.

Supplementary angles: think straight line

A straight angle measures 180°. If one angle is 68°, its supplement is 180° – 68° = 112°.

Adjacent angles on a straight line are a common supplementary pair.

Worked example with algebra

If complementary angles are x + 10° and 2x + 5°, then (x + 10) + (2x + 5) = 90.

So 3x + 15 = 90, x = 25, and the angles are 35° and 55°.

Worked example with supplementary angles

If supplementary angles are 3x° and x + 20°, then 3x + x + 20 = 180.

So x = 40, giving angles 120° and 60°.

Do not confuse supplementary with equal

Supplementary angles need not be equal. They only need a total of 180°. If they are equal, each is 90°.

Use vocabulary as an instruction

  • complementary → total 90°
  • supplementary → total 180°
  • right angle → 90°
  • straight line → 180°
  • full turn → 360°

Connect the language to notation

If ∠ABC and ∠CBD are complementary, their measures add to 90°. The middle letter identifies the vertex.

A checking routine

  1. Identify the relationship.
  2. Write 90° or 180°.
  3. Build the equation.
  4. Solve.
  5. Substitute back.
  6. Check the angle sum.

Independent practice with answers

  1. Complement of 27°.
  2. Supplement of 124°.
  3. Complementary angles x and 2x: find x.
  4. Supplementary angles 2x and x+30°: find x.
  5. Can two obtuse angles be complementary?

Answers: 63°; 56°; 30°; 50°; no.

Frequently asked questions

Can complementary angles be equal?

Yes. Two equal complementary angles are 45° each.

Why review this after PSLE?

Because Secondary geometry combines vocabulary, diagram reading and algebra in the same question.

Continue through the post-PSLE Mathematics route

A calm transition is built from precise relationships. Once the student can explain the idea, a fresh question becomes much less intimidating.
