Science in Punggol | 0006 — Repeat, Check and Improve Your Conclusions

Science in Punggol study guide · Article 0006 of 20

Repeated results help you check whether an outcome is consistent. Reviewing the method helps you decide whether the conclusion is supported. Both matter because repeating a mistake can produce the same wrong result many times.

A car might stop early after hitting an obstacle. A thermometer placed differently might give a different reading. An unexpected result is a reason to investigate, rather than hide the number.

Repeat with the same method

A repeat uses the same comparison under the intended conditions. If the method changes between attempts, the resulting differences may come from the method instead of the factor being investigated.

Exact matches are not always expected. Small differences can arise from measurement limits or slight changes in the setup. Record every result clearly enough to compare the trials.

Consistent results strengthen the evidence for a particular conclusion. They do not prove that the method is free from error. For example, the same damaged instrument may give the same misleading readings in each trial.

Check unexpected results

When one result differs greatly, check the starting conditions, equipment and measurement method. Was the instrument read correctly? Did an object move? Was a connection loose? A specific explanation can suggest a useful improvement.

Do not remove a result simply because it disagrees with your prediction. If you have evidence of a measurement or method error, record what happened. If the reason remains unclear, keep the uncertainty visible and consider further trials.

If two people get different results, compare their rules. They may have used different starting points to measure height or different moments to start a timer. Agreeing on the method may resolve the disagreement.

Ask someone to check the reasoning

Another person may notice a missing unit, an uncontrolled variable or a conclusion that goes beyond the data. A useful review examines how the evidence was collected and how it was interpreted.

Agreement is helpful, but it is not proof. Two people using the same incorrect assumption can reach the same mistaken conclusion. The checker needs to understand the question and method, rather than simply approve the answer.

After an investigation, identify the pattern, one part of the method you checked, and one limitation. This keeps confidence tied to evidence instead of how convincing the answer sounds.

Worked question

Question: In this hypothetical investigation, identical containers hold equal amounts of warm water at the same starting temperature, above room temperature. One is wrapped in insulating material. The other is unwrapped. Their temperature drops after ten minutes are measured in three trials under the same room conditions.

  • Wrapped container: four, five and four degrees Celsius.
  • Unwrapped container: ten, nine and ten degrees Celsius.

What conclusion do these results support?

Worked explanation: The wrapped container had a smaller temperature drop in every trial. Under the tested conditions, the wrapping slowed cooling by reducing the rate of heat transfer to the cooler surroundings. The repeated results support the same pattern across all three trials.

Common mistake: Do not conclude that the wrapping prevents all cooling or is better than every other material. The water still cooled, and no other wrapping materials were tested. Those claims would need different evidence.

A conclusion should say what the results support, under the conditions investigated. Repetition strengthens the comparison while leaving its boundaries clear.
