An example earns its place in an exam answer only when it helps prove something.
Students often collect examples as though quantity itself were evidence. They memorise case studies, quotations, historical events, scientific applications, vocabulary examples and model situations. Then, under pressure, they unload whatever they remember onto the page.
The result can look impressive and still be weak.
A relevant example with a clear explanation can do more work than three examples that sit beside the argument without proving it.

Mira is answering an essay question about whether technology makes learning more independent.
She has seven examples in her head.
Online courses. Translation tools. Search engines. Artificial intelligence tutors. Video lessons. Digital flashcards. Collaborative documents.
Her old instinct was to mention as many as possible.
Her stronger answer chooses two.
One shows how immediate access to explanation can reduce dependence on a teacher. The other shows a limitation: a learner can appear independent while still depending on a tool to make every decision.
The two examples do different jobs.
That is why they belong.
An Example Has Three Parts
- Identity: what is the example?
- Relevant detail: which part of it matters?
- Connection: how does that detail support the point?
Students often provide the first two and omit the third.
The connection is where the example becomes evidence.
The Example Is Not the Point
A historical event, scientific observation or real-world case does not automatically prove the claim simply because it is related.
Clara writes, “For example, the 2008 financial crisis.”
That is not yet an argument.
She must identify which feature of that event supports the specific claim she is making and why.

Relevance Beats Fame
Students sometimes prefer famous examples because they sound impressive.
But a famous example that only loosely fits the question is weaker than a less dramatic example that directly proves the point.
The examination is not rewarding celebrity. It is rewarding fit.
Specificity Beats Vagueness
“Many countries use technology in schools” is broad.
A stronger example identifies a specific policy, tool, study or situation where the details are known accurately and are relevant to the claim.
But specificity should stop before the answer becomes a biography of the example.
Use only the detail needed to make the evidence credible and useful.
One Example Can Support More Than One Point—Carefully
A rich case can sometimes support several arguments.
But do not reuse the same example repeatedly unless each use reveals a different relevant feature.
If Mira mentions the same technology example in three paragraphs with essentially the same explanation, she is not adding evidence. She is repeating herself.
More Examples Are Not Automatically More Marks
Some questions explicitly ask for two examples, several reasons or multiple pieces of evidence. Follow the instruction.
But where the question does not reward example count directly, adding more can consume time without increasing proof.
Ask whether the next example changes the argument.
If it merely says the same thing again, stop.
The Evidence Ladder
Examples vary in evidential strength.
- Illustration: helps the reader imagine the idea.
- Supporting example: gives a concrete instance of the claim.
- Comparative evidence: allows two cases to be contrasted.
- Counterexample: tests or limits the claim.

Counterexamples Are Powerful

In discursive or argumentative writing, examples can do several jobs:

If a question asks for comparison, two examples should not be written as isolated mini-essays.
Connect them:
- both show;
- unlike;
- whereas;
- more significant because;
- the difference matters because.
Comparison turns two examples into one analytical structure.
Science: Examples Must Respect the Mechanism
Aisha gives a real-world example of diffusion.
The example helps only if the process she describes actually involves the relevant mechanism.
A familiar situation that sounds scientific but does not fit the mechanism can weaken the explanation.

Science: Data Can Be the Example
If a graph or table is supplied, the strongest example may be a specific data point or comparison from the paper itself.
Aisha writes, “At 30°C the reaction completed faster than at 20°C,” then links that observation to the mechanism.
The evidence is local, specific and directly relevant.
Mathematics: Examples Can Test a General Claim
In Mathematics, an example is often not enough to prove a general statement, but it can test understanding, reveal a counterexample or illustrate a pattern.
Ryan must distinguish:
- an example that illustrates;
- a counterexample that disproves a universal claim;
- a proof that establishes the claim generally.
One successful numerical case does not usually prove that a rule always works.
Definitions and Examples Work Together
An example can clarify a definition, but it should not replace the definition where the question asks for precise meaning.

The Example Selection Test
Before writing an example, ask four questions:
- Does it directly fit the claim?
- Do I know it accurately enough?
- Can I explain the connection?
- Does it add something not already proved?
If the answer to several is no, choose another example or omit it.
The Example Bank Should Be Organised by Job
Memorising a random list of examples creates retrieval without selection.
Organise examples by the claims or concepts they can support.

Do Not Example-Dump
Example dumping occurs when several cases are listed with little explanation.

The opposite failure is turning one example into a long story.

A vaguely remembered statistic or quotation can create fragility.

The example must be selected, stated and explained.

Use one rich case and ask the learner to support three different claims from it.
For each claim, the learner must select a different relevant feature of the same case.
This trains the difference between knowing an example and using it analytically.
The Counterexample Drill
Give an absolute claim such as “technology always improves learning.”
Ask the learner for one case that challenges the word “always,” then explain what narrower claim survives.
This builds evaluative precision.
The Remove-the-Example Test
After writing, mentally remove the example.
If the argument remains exactly as strong, the example may not be doing enough work.
If removing it destroys the evidence bridge, the example is probably functional.
Examples Under Time Pressure
When time is short, choose examples with a high evidence-to-word ratio.
Prefer a case you know well enough to state quickly and connect directly. Avoid spending three minutes reconstructing an obscure example while a simpler one could prove the same point.

- Is the example directly relevant?
- Is the factual detail accurate enough to use?
- Is only the necessary detail included?
- Is the connection between example and claim explained?
- Are repeated examples doing genuinely different jobs?
- Can counterexamples refine overgeneralised claims?
- Does the learner distinguish illustration from proof?
- Are examples organised by argumentative or conceptual job in revision?
- Can the learner stop when the evidence is sufficient?
Red, Amber and Green Example Control
Red: examples are dumped, vaguely remembered or disconnected from the claim; quantity substitutes for explanation.
Amber: examples are relevant and usually explained, but repetition or unnecessary detail still consumes time.
Green: the learner chooses evidence for a specific job, uses enough detail to make it credible, explains the connection and stops when the point is genuinely proved.

They were alternatives, not obligations.
