- Read the command. State, describe, explain, compare, justify, evaluate, calculate and infer do not require the same output.
- Notice the mark value or task weight.
- Identify the evidence units required. Facts, steps, comparisons, reasons, examples, working, quotations or conclusions.
- Write the shortest complete response.
- Stop when the answer contract is satisfied.
- Use remaining time elsewhere.
- Check for missing parts, not decorative extra detail.

Everything she writes is related to the topic. Only one sentence actually answers the question.
The extra writing feels safe because it looks thorough.

Answer Length Is an Information Problem
Word count alone is a poor measure.
Two students can write the same number of words while one answer contains three relevant reasoning units and the other repeats the same point three ways.
Train learners to think in information units:
- one relevant fact;
- one comparison point;
- one causal link;
- one piece of evidence;
- one mathematical state;
- one evaluative criterion;
- one inference supported by text.
The number and type of units depend on the real assessment rubric.
Marks Are Signals, Not Universal Word Counts
A common mistake is inventing a fixed rule such as “one sentence per mark.”

Under-Answering
Under-answering happens when the response stops before the contract is complete.

- an inference gives evidence but not the conclusion;
- an essay paragraph asserts without developing.
The cure is not automatically more words. It is adding the missing information unit.
Overwriting
Overwriting happens when the answer continues after the task has already been satisfied.
Typical causes:
- uncertainty;
- fear that a short answer looks weak;
- poor command-word recognition;
- memorised notes being unloaded;
- difficulty deciding which evidence matters;
- belief that effort itself earns marks.
Overwriting can damage both timing and precision.
The Stop Rule
Students need a reason to stop writing.
Stop when every required information unit is present, connected and expressed clearly enough to be rewarded.
This is a stronger rule than “write until it feels complete.”
Mathematics: Working Should Be Complete, Not Inflated
In Mathematics, answer economy often means preserving enough state that method and reasoning are visible without creating unnecessary algebra.

The shorter route is useful only if it remains reliable and acceptable under the marking scheme. Compression should not hide required working.

Her training rule becomes:
cause → mechanism → effect, once and clearly.
If the mark scheme requires more than one factor or comparison, add the missing unit. Do not repeat the first unit with synonyms.
Science: Observation Is Not Extra Explanation
When data is provided, students may restate every number before explaining it.
Use only the observation needed to support the required explanation. The exact amount depends on the question.
English Comprehension: Precision Beats Padding
Ben often adds a second sentence because the first one feels too short.
The second sentence sometimes weakens the answer by broadening beyond the text.

- Did I answer the exact reference?
- Did I provide the evidence or inference required?

If the first sentence already satisfies the contract, he stops.
Writing: Answer Economy Is Not Short Writing
Extended writing has a different economy.
An essay may need development, examples, reasoning, counterargument and conclusion. The goal is not minimal word count. It is allocating words according to argumentative value.

Redundant paragraphs are expensive.
Humanities: Evidence Density Matters
Clara writes long History paragraphs because she includes every fact she remembers.

The measure is not information volume. It is information relevance and reasoning density.
Languages: Enough Structure to Show Control
Language tasks may assess content, vocabulary, grammar, register and organisation through different rubrics.
Train the required form. A short transactional task should not become an essay. An extended response should not be reduced to telegraphic sentences merely to finish early.

Green: responses contain the required information, evidence and working with little waste; answer length adapts to task; time saved is available for the rest of the paper.
