How to Check Your Work in Exams | Catch High-Value Errors Before Time Runs Out

“Check your work” sounds sensible until the student asks the obvious question: check what?

An examination may contain pages of calculations, explanations, essays, diagrams or short answers. The learner usually has only a small amount of time left. Repeating the whole paper is impossible. Reading everything again without a plan can consume the final minutes while the most predictable personal errors remain untouched.

Good checking is therefore not a second attempt at the examination. It is risk management.

The 60-Second Checking System

  1. Check completeness first. Missing pages, blank parts and unanswered compulsory items are high-value risks.
  2. Check personal recurring errors. Use evidence from previous papers.
  3. Check high-consequence answers. Long questions and fragile calculations deserve more attention.
  4. Check answer contracts. Command word, units, evidence, required form.
  5. Recalculate only where there is reason. Do not randomly redo everything.
  6. Change an answer only with new evidence.
  7. Stop when the clock ends.

Adrian’s Five-Minute Problem

Adrian has five minutes left in a Mathematics practice paper.

He starts again from question one.

At question four, the timer sounds.

Question thirteen still contains a missing unit. Question seventeen has a sign error. The final page has one blank subpart he never noticed.

He checked four questions carefully and protected almost nothing.

Jo changes the routine. Next time, Adrian starts with a paper scan, then checks his three historical risks: signs, units, inner derivatives.

Checking becomes targeted.

Checking Has Three Timescales

1. Micro-check

A few seconds at the end of a question: Did I answer what was asked? Unit? Sign? Conclusion?

2. Section check

A short pause after a section when the examination structure allows it: blanks, page order, obvious inconsistencies.

3. Final check

The remaining examination time is allocated across completeness, personal risks and high-value fragile answers.

Strong checking is distributed. It does not depend entirely on a heroic final sweep.

The First Final Check: Completeness

Before re-solving anything, scan the paper.

  • Were all pages attempted?
  • Were all compulsory questions answered?
  • Are there blank subparts?
  • Did a continuation page get forgotten?
  • Are answers in the correct spaces or booklets?

A blank five-mark question can be more important than a subtle one-mark arithmetic risk.

The Personal Error Card

Checking should come from actual error history.

Ryan’s card:

  • inner derivative;
  • negative signs after expansion;
  • units;
  • calculator transcription.

Aisha’s Science card:

  • command word;
  • complete causal chain;
  • use evidence from data;
  • do not overwrite low-mark questions.

Ben’s English card:

  • pronoun reference;
  • answer exact question;
  • evidence linked to inference;
  • final paragraph still supports thesis.

By examination day, the list should be mentally available. The card belongs to training, not necessarily to the examination desk.

Risk-Based Checking

Not every answer deserves equal checking time.

Allocate more attention when an answer is:

  • high-mark;
  • calculation-heavy;
  • completed under time pressure;
  • based on a method the learner often confuses;
  • one the learner marked as uncertain;
  • late in the paper when fatigue was rising.

Confidence as a Checking Signal

During practice, ask learners to mark answers mentally or lightly as confident, uncertain or guessed.

Uncertain answers deserve more checking than routine ones. But wrong-and-confident errors are especially important during training because they reveal blind spots. Those blind spots should become part of the personal risk list.

Do Not Change Answers Without Evidence

A student rereads a multiple-choice question and suddenly feels uneasy. That feeling alone is not evidence.

Change an answer when the recheck reveals something concrete: a missed constraint, a calculation error, a stronger textual reference, a misread graph, a unit mismatch.

Repeated answer-switching without new information can convert correct answers into incorrect ones.

Mathematics: Check State, Not Just Final Numbers

Mathematics allows several powerful checks:

  • substitute answers back when practical;
  • check sign and unit;
  • estimate magnitude;
  • check copied values;
  • inspect fragile algebraic transitions;
  • check whether every part has been answered;
  • ask whether the result makes sense in context.

A student need not redo every calculation. Check the states most likely to fail.

The Reverse Check

Where appropriate, verify by a different route.

If an equation solution can be substituted into the original equation, that may be stronger than repeating the same algebraic steps, because repeating the same route can reproduce the same mistake.

The Magnitude Check

Before accepting a numerical answer, ask whether its size is plausible.

A probability above 1, a negative length, an implausibly large percentage or a speed wildly inconsistent with the context should trigger inspection.

Reasonableness catches errors that line-by-line rereading may miss.

Science: Check the Command and the Chain

For Science, Aisha uses two questions:

Did I do the command? Is the causal chain complete?

If the question says compare, did she make the comparison explicit? If it says explain, did she connect observation to mechanism? If data is supplied, did she actually use it where required?

English Comprehension: Check the Reference

Ben’s common error is correct reasoning attached to the wrong textual reference.

His check is:

  • What exact word, phrase or sentence does the question refer to?
  • Does my evidence come from there?
  • Does my inference stay within what that evidence supports?

Writing: Check Architecture Before Commas

If only a few minutes remain, checking the essay’s argument or task fulfilment may be more valuable than polishing every sentence.

Check in this order where appropriate:

  1. Did I answer the prompt?
  2. Does the structure hold?
  3. Are claims supported?
  4. Is the final paragraph complete?
  5. Then catch high-probability language errors.

Humanities: Check the Argument Contract

For essays and source-based responses, check:

  • command word;
  • scope;
  • thesis consistency;
  • evidence relevance;
  • comparison or evaluation where required;
  • final judgement.

A fluent answer that drifted from the question needs structural repair more urgently than stylistic polish.

The Blank-Space Scan

One of the fastest high-value checks is visual.

Flip through the paper and look for unexpected white space, unanswered subparts, missing diagrams or unfilled answer boxes.

This catches omissions before detailed checking begins.

The Last-Page Rule

Students sometimes forget the final page because they mentally finish when a long question ends.

Make the final-page scan a habit during practice. It costs seconds and protects against a catastrophic omission.

Checking Under Time Pressure

If only two minutes remain, triage.

  1. Blanks.
  2. Compulsory parts.
  3. Personal high-risk errors.
  4. One or two uncertain high-value answers.

Do not spend two minutes rewriting a neat answer that was already likely correct.

Checking With Ten Minutes

With more time:

  1. Completeness scan.
  2. Return to marked uncertain items.
  3. Run personal risk checks.
  4. Inspect high-mark fragile answers.
  5. Use remaining time for secondary checks.

The Question-Closure Habit

A few seconds after each question can prevent expensive final rechecking.

Before moving on:

  • Did I answer the exact question?
  • Is the required unit or conclusion present?
  • Did I accidentally omit a subpart?

This is especially useful for recurrent errors that are cheap to detect immediately.

Checking Must Be Trained

Do not introduce a checking routine for the first time in the real exam.

During home simulations, reserve final minutes and require the learner to use the intended sequence. Then analyse what the checks actually caught.

A checking strategy that never finds the learner’s real errors should be redesigned.

Measure Checking Yield

After practice, record:

  • minutes spent checking;
  • errors found;
  • marks plausibly recovered;
  • errors still missed.

This reveals which checks are worth keeping.

Do Not Check by Repeating the Same Mistake

If Ryan made a calculator-entry error and simply enters the same sequence again from the same copied number, he may reproduce the error.

Where possible, use an independent check: estimate first, re-read source values, substitute back, or verify from another representation.

Do Not Overcheck Early Questions

Perfectionist learners can spend so much time rechecking every early response that later questions are rushed.

Checking must obey the whole-paper budget. A low-risk one-mark question does not deserve five minutes of reassurance.

Do Not Confuse Neatness With Checking

Rewriting a correct answer neatly may have low value if the existing work is readable and time is limited.

Use the final minutes to protect marks, not appearance.

Parents: Build the Risk List From Evidence

Parents can help review marked papers and identify recurring patterns, but the learner should eventually own the list.

Jo no longer says, “Remember your signs.” Adrian knows signs are on his own list because previous papers proved they belong there.

The risk list becomes internalised rather than externally policed.

The Five-Minute Home Checking Drill

Take a completed practice set and give the learner five minutes to check it using the intended priority order.

Afterward, reveal all errors and ask:

  • What did the checking find?
  • What did it miss?
  • Why?
  • Should the risk list change?

The Checking Audit

  1. Is checking time protected in the pacing plan?
  2. Does the learner scan for blanks first?
  3. Are recurring personal risks known?
  4. Are high-mark fragile answers prioritised?
  5. Does the learner check the question contract?
  6. Are units and conclusions verified where relevant?
  7. Can uncertain answers be identified?
  8. Are answer changes based on new evidence?
  9. Are independent checks used where possible?
  10. Does checking recover real marks in practice?
  11. Can the learner execute the routine without adult prompts?

Red, Amber and Green Checking

Red: “check your work” has no operational meaning; the learner rereads from question one or makes random answer changes.

Amber: obvious omissions and some recurring risks are checked, but the sequence is inconsistent or checking time often disappears.

Green: final time is protected; completeness comes first; personal risks and high-value uncertain answers receive attention; checks are efficient, evidence-based and independently executed.

Aisha Finds the Missing Link

Aisha has six minutes left in a Science simulation.

She scans the pages. Nothing blank.

She checks her personal risks.

On a three-mark explanation, she has written the observation and the final consequence but skipped the mechanism connecting them.

One sentence repairs the answer.

Twenty seconds.

That is what checking is for.

The Canonical Boundary

This page owns in-examination checking strategy: completeness scans, personal risk lists, high-value answer verification, question closure, independent checks and evidence-based answer changes under limited remaining time.

It does not own error diagnosis after the paper or general time management. Its job is narrower: use the final available minutes where they have the highest probability of recovering marks.

The Return Path

A good checking routine is personal.

It remembers the learner’s history so the learner does not have to rediscover the same risks on examination day.

Scan what is missing. Inspect what is fragile. Check what usually fails. Change only with evidence. Protect the clock.

The last five minutes should not be a smaller version of the first two hours. They have their own job: find the marks that are still recoverable.
