67. What not to do
- Do not romanticise all inherited knowledge. Some is wrong or harmful.
- Do not treat age as proof of expertise in every domain.
- Do not dismiss older people because some information is outdated.
- Do not dismiss younger people because their expertise is new.
- Do not turn every family story into a moral lesson.
- Do not confuse memory with objective record.
- Do not publish private family knowledge simply because it is interesting.
- Do not make children responsible for preserving the entire family archive.
- Do not let family knowledge compete unnecessarily with teachers or specialists.
- Do not preserve a rule after its mechanism has disappeared merely because it is old.
68. Research base and responsible claims
This article draws on several research traditions rather than treating the family as one homogeneous educational intervention. The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning’s current work on family and intergenerational literacy and learning emphasises learning across generations and diverse cultural contexts. UNESCO has also highlighted the role of language in intergenerational learning. Research on cumulative cultural learning examines the complementary roles of exploration, observation, participation, imitation and instruction in cultural transmission. The funds-of-knowledge tradition documents intellectual and practical resources embedded in households. Research on intergenerational family narratives and adolescent narrative meaning-making examines how stories can participate in identity development.
These literatures do not support a simplistic claim that more grandparents, more stories or more tradition automatically improve school results. Family learning is shaped by relationship quality, resources, culture, accuracy, opportunity and context. The practical framework used here—preserve, route, translate, verify, update—is an explanatory model for families, not a validated psychological instrument.

70. The recipe finally gets written down
Years later, Mira is in the kitchen with Jo.
The same dish is cooking.
Mira has made it enough times to recognise what “enough” looks like.
She opens a notebook.
“I’m writing this down properly.”
Jo laughs.
“Properly?”
“As properly as possible.”
They measure one version. Record the steps. Add notes for what changes when the quantity changes. Write the family name for one ingredient beside the English name.
The recipe is not exactly Jo’s mother’s recipe anymore.
It is also not disconnected from it.
Something has travelled through three generations.
Something has been translated.
Something has been made easier for the next person to retrieve.
And when Mira eventually changes one part because she discovers a better way, the family has not lost the tradition.
It has kept the tradition alive enough to learn.
The healthiest inheritance is not a command to repeat the past. It is enough knowledge of the past to build the next version intelligently.
