When Mathematics marks fall, the obvious response is often more practice. Sometimes that is exactly right. Sometimes it repeats the same mistake more efficiently.

Six Different Reasons a Maths Answer Can Be Wrong
- Knowledge: the concept or fact is missing.
- Interpretation: the problem was misunderstood.
- Representation: the quantities were modelled incorrectly.
- Method selection: the student chose an unsuitable route.
- Execution: arithmetic or algebra broke after a correct plan.
- Checking: an implausible result was not challenged.
More practice is useful when the student understands the structure and needs fluency. It is less useful when the same earlier reasoning failure is repeated.
Use Marked Work as Evidence
Bring several recent questions rather than one total score. Look for a pattern across topics.

When Tuition May Be Worth Adding
Tuition may be useful when a recurring bottleneck is not being resolved by normal school feedback, when the learner needs closer observation of solution steps, or when earlier gaps are blocking current work.
It may also help a strong student who needs deeper transfer and unfamiliar problem solving rather than additional routine questions.
When More Tuition May Not Help
If the student already understands school mathematics, responds well to feedback and improves through independent practice, another class may add workload without adding much value.
Mathematics needs time to think as well as time to practise.
What 3-Pax Should Change
In a three-student class, the tutor should be able to see the solution process rather than only the final answer. Students can compare different routes, but every learner must still solve independently so peer reasoning does not hide a personal gap.
The Parent Decision Rule
Choose more practice when the method is understood but not yet fluent. Choose diagnosis and repair when the same wrong reasoning keeps returning.
