Primary 1 is a transition, not an automatic signal that tuition is required. Some children settle quickly into classroom instructions, reading, writing and early number work. Others show a specific bottleneck that becomes easier to repair when it is noticed early.

Start With School-Entry Evidence

Do Not Add Two Subjects Automatically
A child may need English support and be mathematically secure, or the reverse. Adding English and Mathematics together because “P1 has started” can create unnecessary weekly load.
- identify the subject with the clearest recurring friction;
- check whether school and home support are already enough;
- add the smallest useful intervention;
- review after several weeks;
- reduce or stop if the original problem has settled.
P1 Support Should Build Independence
The child should need fewer prompts over time. In English, that may mean reading an instruction and starting. In Math, it may mean choosing a drawing or number sentence without being told which representation to use.
