Should English Tuition Continue, Change, Reduce or Stop? | Punggol Parent Guide

English tuition should not continue simply because it has become part of the timetable. The useful question is whether the intervention is still solving a clear language problem at a reasonable cost in time, attention and family workload.

This page owns the cross-Primary/Secondary CONTINUE / CHANGE / REDUCE / STOP decision. It evaluates diagnosis clarity, repeated-error reduction, transfer, independence, school evidence, workload and total family cost.

eduKate Punggol currently teaches in small groups of three students for 1.5 hours. Current level availability, lesson location, timetable, fees and places should be confirmed directly.

Quick decision matrix

DecisionBest evidence
CONTINUEThe language problem is clear, errors are shrinking, transfer is improving and the job is unfinished.
CHANGEImportant errors repeat without a convincing repair, feedback does not transfer, or the teaching/level is mismatched.
REDUCEThe learner is increasingly independent and needs less external support.
STOPThe original job is solved, school/self-study is enough, or total cost now exceeds the benefit.

Start with the original tuition job

Why did the child start English tuition?

  • reading fluency / access?
  • comprehension inference?
  • vocabulary in context?
  • grammar production?
  • composition organisation / development?
  • oral/listening confidence and independence?
  • PSLE or Secondary examination calibration?
  • transition to a new subject level?

If the original job is no longer relevant, the programme should be reviewed.

Signal 1: repeated errors should reduce

Repeated English lossEvidence of improvement
Inference unsupportedAnswers use textual clues more accurately.
Writing lacks paragraph focusNew pieces have clearer paragraph jobs.
Grammar rule disappears in compositionIndependent writing keeps the corrected form.
Oral needs repeated promptingStudent develops points independently.
Vocabulary is memorised but awkwardUsage becomes natural in changed contexts.

Signal 2: feedback should transfer

Feedback → changed text / prompt → delayed retest → school transfer.

A beautifully corrected composition does not prove progress. A new composition that independently contains the same improvement is stronger evidence.

Signal 3: school evidence should eventually move

  • teacher comments change,
  • same comprehension loss repeats less often,
  • independent writing becomes more coherent,
  • oral feedback improves,
  • timed school performance approaches tuition performance.

Tuition should not remain a separate world in which the student appears strong only during the lesson.

Signal 4: prompting should reduce

StageSupport
ModelTutor demonstrates.
GuideExplicit questions/cues.
FadeFewer/general prompts.
IndependentStudent plans/answers/revises.
TransferSkill survives outside tuition.

If the learner still needs the same amount of prompting months later, ask whether the teaching is building dependence.

When to CONTINUE English tuition

  • the active language bottleneck is clear,
  • the repair is producing measurable change,
  • changed-task transfer is improving,
  • school work reflects the progress,
  • the child still benefits from explicit feedback,
  • the total weekly load remains sustainable.

Continue because the intervention is working and the job is incomplete.

When to CHANGE English tuition

  • the same important errors repeat for a long period,
  • the programme cannot explain why progress has stalled,
  • model answers replace independent production,
  • feedback is not retested,
  • subject level / examination demands are mismatched,
  • the child is completing large amounts of work with little transfer.

Changing can mean changing tutor, class format, teaching focus or simply the tuition job.

When to REDUCE English tuition

  • the learner independently reads and corrects more effectively,
  • writing feedback has become internalised,
  • school results and teacher comments are stable,
  • tuition is mostly checking rather than teaching,
  • the student has a reliable self-study routine.

Reduction can be a success condition, not a failure.

When to STOP English tuition

  • the original language job is solved,
  • school/home reading and practice are sufficient,
  • the child is independent enough to continue alone,
  • the workload is displacing sleep, reading or other valuable activity,
  • marginal benefit has become very small.

Tuition is a tool. It does not need to become a permanent identity.

The total-cost test

Total family cost = fees + travel + waiting + tuition homework + displaced reading / sleep / family time / independent study.

English improves through exposure and use as well as explicit teaching. A tuition schedule that consumes all available reading and conversation time can work against language development.

Primary English review: what progress should look like

  • P1–P2: easier reading access, stronger sentence meaning, growing vocabulary and oral confidence.
  • P3–P4: stronger inference, answer construction, grammar production and paragraph organisation.
  • P5: writing feedback transferring to new prompts; deeper comprehension; stronger P6 runway.
  • P6: component losses shrinking, timed execution improving, independence rising.

Secondary English review: what progress should look like

  • reading interpretations become more evidence-based,
  • summary/paraphrase improves where assessed,
  • writing fulfils task more reliably,
  • grammar survives longer writing,
  • oral/listening work becomes more independent,
  • timed performance becomes more stable.

Do not judge English tuition only by marks

Marks matter, but language learning has useful leading indicators:

  • better self-correction,
  • stronger reading stamina,
  • more precise answers,
  • more coherent writing,
  • natural vocabulary growth,
  • less prompting.

These indicators should eventually support improved school performance, but a single test can fluctuate.

Do not judge English tuition only by confidence

Confidence is useful when it grows from competence. Ask what the child can now do independently that they could not do before.

A four-week English tuition review

QuestionEvidence
Is the diagnosis clear?Specific language bottleneck.
Is feedback working?Repeated error reducing.
Does it transfer?Changed task and school work.
Is independence rising?Fewer prompts.
Is cost sustainable?Workload, travel and recovery.

Why three students can help—but only if used well

Three students can discuss the same text or prompt while revealing different language bottlenecks. The tutor can compare interpretations and give individual feedback. The class size is valuable only if this visibility leads to personalised repair and independent retesting.

Questions to ask the tutor

  • What is my child’s current English bottleneck?
  • What evidence shows it is improving?
  • Which feedback still does not transfer?
  • How much prompting remains?
  • What is visible in school work?
  • What would make you recommend reducing support?

The exit-condition principle

Continue when the intervention is working and the job remains useful. Change when the same important problem persists without a convincing repair. Reduce when the learner can carry more of the work independently. Stop when the job is solved or the total cost exceeds the remaining benefit. Good English tuition should build a learner who increasingly needs less of it.
