Bus Guide | Where to Go, What to Do | Interesting Places SBS Transit Bus Service 86 Goes To

Where does SBS Transit Bus Service 86 go, and what interesting places can you visit? Bus 86 links Sengkang Bus Interchange with Ang Mo Kio Bus Interchange, travelling through Rivervale and Rumbia, Jalan Kayu’s heritage and food streets, Yio Chu Kang Road and Yio Chu Kang MRT. Its strongest visitor-friendly uses are a carefully planned Jalan Kayu food walk, a scheduled sports visit near Yio Chu Kang or errands at Ang Mo Kio town centre.

The key November 2026 change is the departure point. Since Saturday, 31 October 2026, SBS Transit Service 86 has returned to Sengkang Bus Interchange, Berth B4, after using temporary Compassvale arrangements during upgrading works. Some older route pages still display Compassvale as the origin. Follow the newer dated SBS Transit notice and the current berth signs, not an old screenshot.

For a short reference: 67009 Sengkang Int → 67229 Rumbia Stn Exit A → 68119 Aft Piccadilly Circus/TPE → Jalan Kayu corridor → 55189 Yio Chu Kang Stn → 54009 Ang Mo Kio Int. Service 86A is a morning short trip from Jalan Kayu to Yio Chu Kang MRT; 86B runs the opposite short corridor in the evening. Neither should be mistaken for a full Sengkang–Ang Mo Kio bus.

Quick route guide: the key details

  • Operator: SBS Transit; both ends are bus interchanges, not a single circular service.
  • Current terminals: Sengkang Int (67009) and Ang Mo Kio Int (54009).
  • Current Sengkang boarding: Berth B4, restored 31 October 2026. SBS’s old generic 86 route page may still show temporary Compassvale; the new date-specific announcement controls the boarding guidance.
  • Published first/last from the former Compassvale-labelled timetable: 5.15am–11.30pm weekdays; 5.30am–11.30pm weekends and public holidays. Confirm current restored-interchange timing before a tight departure.
  • Useful rail connections: Rumbia LRT (SE2), Yio Chu Kang MRT (NS15), and Ang Mo Kio MRT (NS16).
  • 86A/86B: weekday peak-direction short trips through Jalan Kayu and Yio Chu Kang, not full trips to both main terminals.
  • Useful destination distinction: Jalan Kayu food streets and Seletar Aerospace Park are not the same place. A bus on Jalan Kayu does not automatically enter aviation businesses or their restricted premises.

Real stop codes: where to get off

These are selected published stopping points on the direction named in the table. They are not guaranteed entrances to buildings or attractions; you may need a walk and a safe crossing. The reverse trip may use different stops.

Why Sengkang’s 31 October change matters more than an old route screenshot

During the Sengkang interchange upgrade, Service 86 was among the services temporarily shifted to Compassvale. A reader could find a genuine but dated map and still stand at the wrong boarding place. SBS Transit’s 7 October 2026 announcement states that Bus 86 and four other routes resumed their original Sengkang operation from 31 October. The associated official berth plan places 86 at B4.

This changes the first part of an outing. For someone arriving on the North East Line, the important journey is to the actual berth, including any stairs, lifts or crossings. An online timetable that still calls the former origin ‘Compassvale Int’ should not be used to contradict the dated restoration notice.

The safer practice is to arrive at Sengkang Interchange, look for the current bus departure display and confirm the number, direction and berth. This is especially important if meeting another person. “Meet at the interchange” can describe several entrances and waiting areas; choose a clearly named point and the expected service.

A reader coming from Punggol should remember that Bus 86 does not originate at Punggol Bus Interchange. A North East Line train or another suitable bus connection may be required to reach Sengkang before Bus 86 begins. Compare the whole journey rather than describing 86 as a direct Punggol route.

Rivervale and Rumbia: why a local bus is useful before the food street

From Sengkang, Bus 86 passes Compassvale and Rivervale residential streets, including 67229 Rumbia Stn Exit A. That connects the road network with Sengkang LRT East Loop and gives residents more choices than the central MRT station alone.

These stops are practical for visiting a home, local shop or community activity. They are not in themselves a paid tourist attraction. Use the full address when choosing an intermediate stop; two blocks can share a broad estate name yet differ in the side of the road and the pedestrian route.

A child learning to travel can compare the bus’s stop sequence with an LRT map. The useful question is how a local bus serves blocks between rail stations. Encourage the child to read the displayed destination, identify the desired stop and then check the return side with an adult.

A trip should not depend on a guess that the nearest station equals the easiest last mile. A convenient bus shelter can be across a busy road from a building, and the more accessible path may take longer than a straight line drawn on a phone.

Jalan Kayu: the strongest food-and-heritage reason to take Bus 86

SG101’s account of Jalan Kayu describes its early connection to RAF Seletar, the roadway’s official naming in the 1930s and the survival of two-storey shophouses dating from the 1950s. A short walk here can be interesting without promising a formal tour or paid museum admission.

The service traverses Jalan Kayu after the expressway and has stops including 68039 Aft Abundant Grace Ch and 68029 Blk 448A. Choose the exact restaurant or street segment before deciding between them. A named shophouse district is not one continuous covered shopping mall with a single entrance.

If your goal is traditional food, confirm the outlet and its opening hours directly. Jalan Kayu is associated with roti prata, but a guide cannot guarantee a particular shop remains open, that a dish is available or that a queue will be short. Look for displayed menus and prices, and plan for any dietary requirements.

A family walking along a public five-foot way can notice architectural details: building proportions, older shutters, shop signs and how road uses change over time. Discuss why the street’s military and farming connections developed into a mixed residential and commercial district. Do not photograph private interiors or block shop entrances.

There is a temptation to extend the outing into Seletar Aerospace Park because the names are associated historically. That needs separate planning. The park’s working aviation estates, private hangars and offices are not automatically open to tourists. A bus to a Jalan Kayu shelter does not make it safe or permissible to wander into an airfield.

Yio Chu Kang Road and the Ang Mo Kio industrial edge

After Jalan Kayu, the Ang Mo Kio-bound 86 continues on Sengkang West Road and Yio Chu Kang Road. Its stop names include Seletar Road, Dedap Road, Begonia Road and the office corridors at ST Engineering and NCS. This is a very different urban landscape from the restaurant street.

For a visitor with a specific office meeting, these stops may be highly useful, but the offices and industrial facilities are not public attractions. Confirm the correct visitor entrance, appointment details and any security registration instead of relying on a bus stop that names the employer.

There is an interesting town-planning story in the public roads and green edges. Along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5, NParks describes Ang Mo Kio Linear Park as a link between residential and industrial areas. However, the park is not the name of a Bus 86 shelter in this direction. To visit, select an actual entrance and map the separate pedestrian route.

NParks also specifies that although the linear park is broadly wheelchair accessible, one entrance from the ‘Aft AMK Ind Pk 2’ stop is not wheelchair accessible. This matters whenever a journey switches between bus and park paths. Do not assume a generally accessible park guarantees every approach is suitable.

A park is optional, not compulsory. A planned food outing in Jalan Kayu can finish there, and a work appointment should not turn into an extra nature walk without checking whether the path is appropriate and open.

Yio Chu Kang MRT and Sport Centre: a purpose you can book

Bus 86’s 55189 Yio Chu Kang Stn stop gives access to the Yio Chu Kang transport precinct. Sport Singapore lists Yio Chu Kang Sport Centre at 200 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 9, near the MRT station. Its listed daily opening window is 7am–10pm, subject to facility-specific rules and updates.

For a sports outing, decide on the exact activity before travel. A sport centre may contain several venues with different booking rules, and a general building opening period does not mean every court or pool is available. Check the current booking or programme listing, then select the correct entrance.

A student practising a sport can use the trip for a lesson in planning: check the session, pack equipment, arrive with time to change and agree on the route home. After training, a tired participant benefits from a clear return stop more than from adding another destination.

Yio Chu Kang MRT is on the North South Line. Some travellers may find a rail transfer here better than riding on to Ang Mo Kio Interchange. The right choice depends on the next destination, actual waiting and walking. The route is not automatically the fastest bus for every person going to Ang Mo Kio.

Ang Mo Kio town centre: when the terminus is the easiest destination

Service 86 ends at 54009 Ang Mo Kio Interchange, which is useful for Ang Mo Kio MRT, shopping and ordinary errands. AMK Hub is part of the wider town-centre precinct, but it has its own signed building entrances; following the interchange signs does not automatically bring someone to a specific retail unit.

A practical afternoon could be lunch followed by a household purchase or an onward MRT connection. Check the actual shop location and hours before leaving Sengkang, because business tenants and service counters can change independently of bus timetables.

On the way into town, the published stop names reference a polyclinic and major retailer. These are valuable navigation points, but a clinic visit requires a booking or registration check and an employer’s premises may have separate visitor restrictions. A health appointment is not a casual sightseeing stop.

If you are returning to Sengkang, check the opposite direction’s published stops and the Ang Mo Kio departure information. It is a different terminal timetable from Sengkang’s departure list, and last-bus times at one end do not apply to every intermediate stop.

How short-trip services 86A and 86B change the plan

SBS Transit operates 86A between Jalan Kayu’s Aft Piccadilly Circus/TPE stop (68119) and Yio Chu Kang station (55189) in the weekday morning peak. 86B operates from the opposite Yio Chu Kang area towards Jalan Kayu in the weekday evening peak. These are useful for some commuters, but they are not complete Sengkang–Ang Mo Kio trips.

The important mistake to avoid is reading only ’86’. A bus labelled 86A may take you from Jalan Kayu to Yio Chu Kang while finishing before Ang Mo Kio town centre. If your destination is Ang Mo Kio Interchange, verify that the bus you board actually continues there.

The official service pages and 86A stop listing show the narrowed route. The short services are not a reason to guess arrival times for the full 86; they have their own directional and operating windows.

If you accidentally board a short-trip bus, check the next lawful stop and plan a suitable continuation. Do not ask a driver to stop outside a marked bus stop or assume that an A/B variant changes to the full service after its printed terminus.

Three practical outings with one clear goal

Jalan Kayu food and architecture

Start at Sengkang Bus Interchange Berth B4, board the Ang Mo Kio-bound full 86 and use a Jalan Kayu stop that matches a named restaurant. Visit public shophouse streets, eat at an open outlet, then check the Sengkang-bound stop before you leave. Keep the walk short in hot weather.

Sport at Yio Chu Kang

Confirm a booking or publicly accessible activity at Yio Chu Kang Sport Centre, then take full Bus 86 to stop 55189 and follow the venue’s entrance information. Return by a verified reverse bus or the North South Line if it is more convenient.

Ang Mo Kio errands without unnecessary detours

Ride to 54009 Ang Mo Kio Interchange, locate the precise shop or MRT entrance and complete one purpose. Avoid adding the industrial corridor as an attraction; return when the errand is finished.

Things that can go wrong—and sensible repairs

  • Old Compassvale instructions: Service 86 returned to Sengkang Interchange on 31 October 2026; follow Berth B4.
  • Wrong bus variant: 86A/86B are short weekday services, not full connections between both main interchanges.
  • Confusing Jalan Kayu with Seletar Aerospace Park: access to aviation premises is not implied by travelling along Jalan Kayu.
  • Choosing a restaurant by district only: use the actual business address and opening hours before selecting the roadside stop.
  • Assuming the park entrance is accessible: check NParks’ Ang Mo Kio Linear Park access exceptions and the actual pedestrian route.
  • Workplace access: ST Engineering, NCS and private offices are working premises; only enter with permission.
  • Sports booking unavailable: check ActiveSG before carrying sports equipment across town.
  • Wrong origin for Punggol travellers: Bus 86 leaves Sengkang, not Punggol, so plan the connection.
