Bus Guide | Where to Go, What to Do | Interesting Places SBS Transit Bus Service 73 Goes To

Where does SBS Transit Bus Service 73 go, and what interesting places can you visit? Service 73 runs in a large circular route from Ang Mo Kio Bus Interchange through Serangoon North, Serangoon Garden Circus, Lorong Chuan MRT and Toa Payoh Bus Interchange, then returns through Lorong Chuan and Serangoon Gardens to Ang Mo Kio. The standout outing is Chomp Chomp Food Centre at Serangoon Gardens, with a separate option to explore Toa Payoh Town Park or a small number of public town-centre sights.

Two important corrections: although the bus goes through Toa Payoh Bus Interchange, the usual service is an Ang Mo Kio-origin loop, not simply a two-terminal service ending at Toa Payoh. But SBS Transit warns that late buses leaving Ang Mo Kio between 11.30pm and 11.45pm terminate at Toa Payoh Interchange, so those runs do not complete the return. Also, Toa Payoh Sport Centre is closed for redevelopment through 2030; do not plan to swim there as though it were an open facility.

Quick point-form summary: SBS 73 — 54009 Ang Mo Kio Int → 66421 Blk 537, Serangoon North → 66271 S’goon Gdn Circus → 66709 Lor Chuan Stn Exit B → 52501 Bef Toa Payoh Pk → 52009 Toa Payoh Int → Lorong Chuan in reverse → 66271 Garden Circus again → 66439 Blk 504A CP → 54269 Opp Ang Mo Kio Stn → 54009 Ang Mo Kio Int. The food centre is at 20 Kensington Park Road and NEA currently lists cleaning 14–16 December 2026. Check the departure direction before expecting a short trip home.

Service 73 facts and late departure warning

  • Operator: SBS Transit, Service 73.
  • Normal origin and return: Ang Mo Kio Bus Interchange, code 54009, near Ang Mo Kio MRT NS16.
  • Route: a ~24.9 km full circuit via Serangoon Gardens and Toa Payoh Interchange, passing Garden Circus twice.
  • Published normal first/last from Ang Mo Kio: 5.30am–11.25pm weekdays, 5.30am–11.20pm weekends/PH as shown in the standard timetable.
  • Late-shortened runs: separate operator note states 11.30pm–11.45pm departures from Ang Mo Kio end at Toa Payoh Int; check actual display and stop-specific information rather than extrapolating the headline full-loop final time.
  • Serangoon Garden Circus: stop 66271 is served before and after Toa Payoh, so the same code can occur at different points of the circuit.
  • Chomp Chomp: NEA-listed food centre at 20 Kensington Park Road; NEA cleaning currently scheduled 14–16 Dec 2026.
  • Toa Payoh Town Park: stop 52501 Bef Toa Payoh Pk, public park at junction Lorong 2/Lorong 6, approximately 4.8 ha and open 24h according to NParks.
  • Toa Payoh Sport Centre: entirely closed for redevelopment since 31 Oct 2023, with official notice through 2030.
  • Not a Serangoon MRT route: Serangoon Garden Circus and Serangoon MRT/NEX are separate places; the route calls at Lorong Chuan MRT but not a named Serangoon MRT station stop.
  • Origin for Punggol households: neither Punggol nor Punggol Coast Int is on this route; a separate first connection is required.

Where to get off and what to check

The five-digit stops below are the published route in its normal circular sequence. A bus-stop code is not an attraction ticket or an exact door-to-door walking instruction. Save your return side and check current live displays.

The shape of Service 73: why Toa Payoh Interchange is the middle, not usually the end

Most people learn bus journeys by thinking of two terminals: start at one and finish at the other. Regular Service 73 is more complicated and therefore more interesting to understand. SBS Transit’s stop sequence begins at Ang Mo Kio Bus Interchange, moves through Serangoon North and Garden Way to Lorong Chuan, reaches Toa Payoh Bus Interchange, and then continues back through Lorong Chuan and Serangoon Gardens to the Ang Mo Kio origin.

In normal service, the bus reaches Toa Payoh at about the middle of its published distance. For someone heading only to the park or Toa Payoh town centre, that is enough. For a resident travelling from Toa Payoh towards Serangoon Gardens, the continued loop can also be useful. However, it would be misleading to tell a first-time rider that it always follows the entire circle without exception.

The exception is printed by SBS Transit: departures from Ang Mo Kio between 11.30pm and 11.45pm will terminate at Toa Payoh Interchange. The ordinary timetable’s headline last full-loop departure is earlier. That suggests the late runs should not be treated as through trips back to Ang Mo Kio. When travelling late, check the bus’s actual displayed destination and operator notices, rather than building a return trip from the circular map alone.

This is a valuable general lesson for Singapore’s bus network. A route may be named for a loop but still have particular shortened departures. The physical road circuit and the scheduled service of an individual bus are related but not identical.

The same lesson applies to boarding at intermediate stops. A 73 at Garden Circus can be either on its first approach towards Toa Payoh or its later return towards Ang Mo Kio, depending on its position in the loop. Read the direction, service display and next two stops before deciding.

Ang Mo Kio town centre: a practical place to start or end without sightseeing

Service 73 leaves 54009 Ang Mo Kio Int near the North South Line and regional shopping environment. That allows a straightforward connection for a family arriving by MRT, meeting another person, or carrying shopping bags. The precise interchange berth and station exit matter, especially if a traveller uses a stroller or mobility aid.

The early stops on Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 include 54261 Aft Ang Mo Kio Stn Exit A, then residential blocks and workplaces. These exist for ordinary travel, and they need not be described as tourist attractions to be useful. A person may be visiting a friend, school or employer by appointment.

The return towards Ang Mo Kio uses 54269 Opp Ang Mo Kio Stn near the end of the loop. This is not the same as the first outward stop code. If the journey begins at Ang Mo Kio but ends near the MRT rather than the interchange, select the stopping point that suits your actual entrance and walking needs.

An older person may prefer the shortest suitable accessible walk instead of a stop that appears marginally closer on an electronic map. A correct route plan must include the platform, lift, pedestrian crossing and building entrance, not only the bus number.

For Punggol residents, Service 73 does not start at Punggol MRT. Choose an appropriate connection to Ang Mo Kio or another actual stop on the route. Do not infer Punggol access merely because Serangoon Gardens and Ang Mo Kio belong to the broader north-eastern region.

Serangoon Gardens: the genuine Chomp Chomp stop that other routes only pass near

One of the most useful features of Bus 73 is that it actually serves 66271 S’goon Gdn Circus. That is the correct named bus stop for the core Serangoon Gardens food precinct. Some other routes stop on Yio Chu Kang Road near Serangoon Garden Way but do not turn into the Garden Circus. The difference can save a family an unnecessarily long walk.

Chomp Chomp Food Centre is located at 20 Kensington Park Road. The National Heritage Board’s Roots account explains how the centre developed from Serangoon Gardens’ earlier street-hawker culture, with its roots in the early 1970s and an earlier market tradition. It provides a substantive piece of Singapore local history, not simply an opportunity to buy food.

For an actual meal, confirm the centre’s current opening and look for operating stalls. Independent vendors have varying rest days, opening times and sold-out periods. A food centre’s historical importance does not guarantee one particular dish or business will be trading on the day of your trip.

Important December 2026 planning detail: the National Environment Agency’s current quarterly cleaning schedule lists 14–16 December 2026 for Chomp Chomp Food Centre. If the meal is the only purpose of a long journey, check the live closure notice before travelling during those dates rather than assuming the centre is open.

A short history-and-food outing can be simple. Read one local historical description, observe the public streetscape, eat at an open stall and return. Children can compare the former suburban planning described by NHB with today’s shops and residential roads. Avoid making claims about individual private homes or using the food centre as an excuse for an overly long road-side photo session.

The stop 66271 appears both before and after Toa Payoh in the full loop. If your aim is to return to Ang Mo Kio after dinner, confirm you are boarding the part of the route that has already come back from Toa Payoh, or choose a safer simpler alternative. The same stop code alone cannot tell you how much of the loop the bus will travel next.

Lorong Chuan: a real Circle Line connection but not Serangoon MRT

After Garden Circus, the bus turns onto Lorong Chuan, serving residential streets and 66709 Lor Chuan Stn Exit B on its way towards Toa Payoh. Lorong Chuan MRT is a Circle Line station. It should not be confused with Serangoon MRT, which is the North East/Circle Line interchange farther away.

A traveller whose destination is a particular home, school or office along Lorong Chuan should use the street address and choose the nearest suitable stop. A school name on a stop pole does not confer public admission to its buildings, and a private condominium driveway is not a public shortcut.

The route’s return portion uses 66701 Goldenhill Pk Condo after travelling back from Toa Payoh. That is not the same shelter as the outward 66709 station exit. It illustrates the need to check the actual road side and sequence before crossing.

A family can make a short MRT-learning visit by comparing the bus’s path to Lorong Chuan station with the Circle Line’s underground route. The practical question is how passengers reach homes between station platforms, and why a road bus can still be useful beside rail.

If the trip ends at a booked activity or appointment rather than Toa Payoh, there is no need to complete the loop. Choose an appropriate return route or train according to the group’s energy, timing and walking access.

Toa Payoh Town Park: the simple green stop at 52501

Before reaching Toa Payoh Interchange, the bus serves 52501 Bef Toa Payoh Pk. NParks locates Toa Payoh Town Park at the junction of Lorong 2 and Lorong 6. The official description calls it an older town park with landscaped features and a distinctive quiet feel in a central housing estate. NParks lists it as 4.8 hectares, open 24 hours and generally wheelchair accessible.

A family can choose one short park path, observe the landscaping and enjoy a rest. The park is modest in size, which can be an advantage for children, older adults and people who do not want to attempt a major forest hike. It can be a lovely activity without paying for a formal event.

Nevertheless, the bus stop is not the park’s entire entrance system. Choose the specific approach from the bus shelter and use a legal crossing. If accessibility matters, include the kerb, ramp and pedestrian route in your check rather than assuming every part of the park can be reached from every nearby road without difficulty.

The park is a different facility from Toa Payoh Sport Centre, which is closed for redevelopment. A visitor should not see the word ‘park’ or ‘sport’ on an old brochure and assume that the old public swimming pool remains available. They are separate destinations with separate operating arrangements.

A useful educational activity is to compare how Toa Payoh’s older estate landscape differs from modern Punggol or Sengkang. Ask a child to notice the public paths, built-up environment and greenery. Keep conclusions limited to what the group actually observes, then use historical sources for context.

The closed Toa Payoh Sport Centre: a warning that avoids a wasted visit

Sport Singapore’s official ActiveSG page identifies Toa Payoh Sport Centre at 301 Lorong 6 Toa Payoh as an entire facility closed for redevelopment, with a notice running from 31 October 2023 through 2030. That is the relevant status for November 2026, not an outdated listing suggesting a normal public swimming or sports session.

Some older online guides still list the former facility as a place to swim after taking a bus to Toa Payoh. A route passing its road does not make the pool available. A family carrying swimwear across town for a closed venue could waste most of the afternoon.

If sport is your objective, first choose a currently operating alternative facility and verify its booking and admission requirements, then select the appropriate bus or MRT journey. Do not encourage a child to enter a redevelopment compound or bypass barriers to reach an old entrance.

The public Toa Payoh Town Park and the shops around the MRT can remain reasonable alternative activities, subject to their own access conditions. A cancelled sports activity does not create an obligation to add a distant unverified second pool.

This is why an honest bus guide distinguishes the transport route, the physical existence of a building and the availability of an activity. They are three different facts.

Toa Payoh Interchange: a genuine mid-route stop, except on late short trips

The full loop calls at 52009 Toa Payoh Int, near the North South Line and HDB Hub. This is a useful public transport hub for errands, food and onward trains. The bus does not ordinarily finish its full journey there; it continues through another part of Toa Payoh and back along Braddell Road and Lorong Chuan.

For people who simply need Toa Payoh town centre, it may be best to get off at 52009 rather than remain aboard for the return loop. The bus continues through residential and community roads, and an unnecessary extra circuit would not make a shopping outing more enjoyable.

But at night, the operator explicitly notes that Ang Mo Kio departures during the 11.30pm–11.45pm window end at Toa Payoh Interchange. That means a passenger who wants to return to Ang Mo Kio using one bus should not assume every late 73 will continue. The departure display and actual arrival information are essential.

The headline timetable separately lists the final ordinary full-loop origin departure as 11.25pm on weekdays or 11.20pm on weekends and holidays. These published pieces of information describe different kinds of journeys. For a late-trip decision, treat any advertised short working as a separate endpoint and verify it with the current operator.

A returning trip from Toa Payoh to Ang Mo Kio can also be made using other suitable buses or the rail network. The fact that normal 73 eventually comes back does not prove it is faster than the MRT from every starting location.

Do not assume the bus station, adjacent mall and park are all the same entrance. For an older adult or someone with mobility needs, the right meeting point and safe pedestrian path can be more important than saving one bus stop.

How to select among Bus 73, Bus 136 and other Serangoon Gardens services

Several routes serve Serangoon Gardens, but they are not the same service. 73 connects Ang Mo Kio with Garden Circus and Toa Payoh in a circular pattern. 136 connects Punggol with Ang Mo Kio via Serangoon Gardens, using a different approach. 315 and 317 provide other neighbourhood connections. The right one depends on your actual boarding stop and where you want to finish.

From Punggol, Bus 136 may be a more direct option for Chomp Chomp than travelling first to Ang Mo Kio to board 73. From an Ang Mo Kio address near Service 73’s road stops, 73 may be simpler. From Toa Payoh, the timing and location of the circuit matter because the bus also serves other stops before Garden Circus.

Chomp Chomp and Serangoon Garden Market are in the Serangoon Gardens precinct but have distinct addresses, and Serangoon MRT/NEX is another area. A bus to Serangoon Garden Circus does not automatically stop at NEX, and a bus to Serangoon MRT does not automatically take you to the hawker centre.

Food-centre cleaning and private business hours are separate. Even when the bus is running, a meal plan can fail if a stall is closed or the centre is being cleaned. Check the intended establishment and a possible backup meal before leaving home.

An outing is successful when the chosen destination is reached safely and the return is understandable. There is no reason to insist on one bus number across the whole journey when a train or different route better fits the final walking distance.

Three real outings

Serangoon Gardens and Chomp Chomp dinner

Take full Service 73 from Ang Mo Kio or a valid stop in the correct part of the loop and alight at 66271 S’goon Gdn Circus. Walk safely to Chomp Chomp at 20 Kensington Park Road, check individual operating stalls and the NEA cleaning period (14–16 Dec 2026), then select the appropriate route home.

Toa Payoh Town Park afternoon

Ride the usual 73 toward Toa Payoh and alight at 52501 Bef Toa Payoh Pk. Choose a manageable public path in the 4.8-hectare park, rest and decide whether to continue to the interchange for a meal or train. Do not include the closed Toa Payoh Sport Centre as a swimming stop.

Lorong Chuan MRT and one local appointment

Use 66709 Lor Chuan Stn Exit B when travelling towards Toa Payoh, follow a confirmed appointment entrance or MRT wayfinding signs, and choose the reverse bus or Circle Line for the return. Do not confuse this with Serangoon MRT.

Common mistakes and practical repairs

  • Normal loop versus late short runs: 73 usually returns to Ang Mo Kio via Toa Payoh, but the operator’s 11.30–11.45pm shortened departures terminate at Toa Payoh.
  • Garden Circus location: 66271 is near Chomp Chomp, not Serangoon MRT/NEX.
  • Food-centre cleaning: Chomp Chomp is scheduled for NEA cleaning 14–16 December 2026.
  • Closed sports centre: Toa Payoh Sport Centre is not open for swimming or courts during its redevelopment through 2030.
  • Repeated Garden Circus stop: the code 66271 appears twice on the full loop, so read next-stop order before boarding for home.
  • Lorong Chuan differences: 66709 outward and 66701 returning are not the same shelter.
  • Park access: use a legal crossing and actual Toa Payoh Town Park entrance, not an assumed shortcut.
  • Punggol starting point: there is no Bus 73 stop at Punggol MRT; compare Bus 136 if coming from Punggol.
