Bus Guide | Where to Go, What to Do | Interesting Places SBS Transit Bus Service 161 Goes To

Where does SBS Transit Bus Service 161 go, and what interesting places can you visit? The service connects Hougang Central Bus Interchange with Woodlands Bus Interchange through parts of Hougang, Buangkok Green and Sengkang, then travels along an extended expressway section before reaching Woodlands. Its clearest visitor-friendly destination is Woodlands town centre, with Causeway Point, Woodlands MRT, Woodlands Regional Library and onward connections.

Bus 161 is not a neighbourhood sightseeing loop through northern Singapore. The published Hougang-to-Woodlands stop list jumps from 65061 Blk 298A on Punggol Road to 46229 Casablanca on Woodlands Avenue 2, covering about 16 kilometres of route distance without ordinary intermediate stopping points. It does not stop at Mandai Wildlife Reserve, the Woodlands Checkpoint or Woodlands Waterfront Park just because those places are somewhere in the northern part of Singapore.

Quick route: 64009 Hougang Ctrl Int → 64379 Punggol CC area → 67401 Opp Sengkang Stn/Blk 260A → 65061 Blk 298A → expressway stretch → 46229 Casablanca → 46339 Bef W’Lands Stn Exit 7 → 46639 W’Lands Stn Exit 4 → 46009 Woodlands Int. It also serves the reverse direction, using different bus stop codes. Travellers coming from Punggol MRT need a separate first leg to a relevant Bus 161 stop.

Route essentials: quick facts before boarding

  • Operator: SBS Transit.
  • Terminals: Hougang Central Int 64009 and Woodlands Int 46009.
  • Published first/last from Hougang: 5.45am–11.30pm weekdays/Saturdays, 6am–11.30pm Sundays/public holidays.
  • Published first/last from Woodlands: 5.45am–11.30pm weekdays and 6am–11.30pm weekends/public holidays.
  • Non-stop expressway section: after 65061 Blk 298A the next published Woodlands-bound stop is 46229 Casablanca, a substantial gap of more than 15 kilometres.
  • Major transit connection: Woodlands MRT (North South Line NS9 and Thomson–East Coast Line TE2) and the Woodlands regional bus interchange.
  • Important negative fact: this route does not list stops at Woodlands Checkpoint, Woodlands Waterfront Park, Singapore Zoo or Mandai Wildlife Reserve.
  • Other destination: Causeway Point is connected to Woodlands MRT and bus interchange, but the mall entrance is distinct from the bus berth.

Where to get off: real bus stops and places

Stop codes below come from the operating company’s published route and apply to the direction stated. Being close to a stop is not equivalent to being at a door, beach entrance or secure facility. Check the final pedestrian path, traffic crossing, admission and return stop independently.

The expressway is the defining feature, not a collection of hidden attractions

The official 161 table shows Bus 161 leaving the Hougang and Sengkang local roads, then joining a long expressway segment. Its published distance rises from 6.3 kilometres at 65061 Blk 298A to 22.4 kilometres at 46229 Casablanca. The difference represents a substantial no-stop part of the route, not a missing list of visitor sites that can be reached by asking the driver.

The implication is practical: once you pass the last Punggol Road stop heading towards Woodlands, you should expect to stay on until the first published stop on Woodlands Avenue 2. You cannot legally alight in the middle of the expressway to visit something that looks geographically close on a map.

This may make 161 useful for an inter-town journey, but it makes the service unsuitable for a stop-by-stop sightseeing tour of places between Sengkang and Woodlands. A responsible guide should say that plainly rather than invent attractions at non-existent stops.

For a young traveller, the lesson is that roads and bus stops are separate information layers. A bus route line can cross an area without having any accessible passenger stopping point there. A route planner needs the complete stopping sequence, not just the drawn line.

If motion sickness or discomfort is a concern, plan a suitable journey and carry what you normally need. A long stretch without a stop means there are fewer opportunities to change plans after the bus joins the expressway.

Hougang Central and its surrounding roads

Bus 161 begins at 64009 Hougang Ctrl Int, connected to Hougang MRT (NE14). It then passes Hougang Avenue 10, 6, 8 and 4, reaching local residential neighbourhoods before Buangkok Green. This matters to commuters whose homes are next to an intermediate stop rather than the MRT station.

The outbound list includes a stop called 64379 Punggol CC. This is a particular community-centre landmark within Hougang’s road corridor and should not be confused with Punggol MRT or One Punggol. A road or building name can survive from older place naming and should not be treated as a direct route to the new town with a similar name.

If you want a meal or errand at Hougang Mall, first identify the actual mall entrance and suitable stop; the bus starts inside Hougang Central Interchange, which is near the wider town centre but not identical to every retail address.

For a visit to a school, clinic or block along Hougang Avenue 8, confirm the specific building and authorised visitor entrance. The service stops at ordinary residential roads, not gates that allow public access to private premises.

The fact that 161 continues to Woodlands does not require you to ride all the way there. A short neighbourhood trip can be appropriate if it meets the actual destination.

Buangkok Green and Sengkang East Road: not the same as Buangkok MRT

The bus passes Buangkok Green, including stops such as 64469 Opp Blk 579, before heading through Sengkang East Road. These are useful for residents, workplaces and appointments in the area. The name Buangkok appears in road names, but that does not mean the route calls directly at Buangkok MRT (NE15).

The Sengkang section includes 67401 Opp Sengkang Stn/Blk 260A on the Woodlands-bound list. It provides a connection to Sengkang MRT/LRT from the roadside. That stop is not the same as boarding inside Sengkang Bus Interchange (67009).

The distinction is especially relevant after the October 2026 interchange works. Other SBS routes such as 80 and 86 are affected by different berth arrangements, but Bus 161’s published roadside stop is a separate location. Do not apply the B3 or B4 berth instructions for those routes to Service 161.

A reader with a stroller or wheelchair should plan the exact route between Sengkang station and 67401, including crossings and lifts. An icon for an MRT interchange on the operator map does not prove the whole approach is step-free.

For a resident in Punggol considering the bus, check whether the nearby Punggol Road stop is actually convenient from home. A road name is not a direct Punggol MRT departure. Other buses or trains may be simpler depending on the starting block.

Woodlands Avenue 2 and the two station-side approaches

After the expressway, the route reaches 46229 Casablanca on Woodlands Avenue 2, then 46339 Bef W’Lands Stn Exit 7 and 46639 W’Lands Stn Exit 4 before ending at Woodlands Interchange.

Those station-side stops are distinct. Which is more convenient depends on the station entrance, shopping centre entrance or meeting point that the passenger needs. Do not treat all Woodlands MRT exits as the same street-level location.

Woodlands MRT is an interchange between the North South Line and the Thomson–East Coast Line. A person intending to transfer by rail can choose an appropriate stop and use the current station signs. Someone shopping at Causeway Point may prefer continuing to the bus interchange and its pedestrian connections.

On the reverse Woodlands-to-Hougang direction, the route lists 46631 Woodlands Stn Exit 5 and 46331 Blk 511 before returning to the expressway. These are not identical codes to the outbound bus’s Exit 7 and Exit 4 stops. Always save the correct return-direction code.

A basic travel-learning exercise is to draw the sequence of ‘Hougang – Sengkang – expressway – Woodlands’. After seeing the actual trip, compare it with a map. The key insight is how a fast inter-town link can have many stops at the ends and very few in between.

Causeway Point: the easiest retail outing after a long inter-town ride

Frasers Property identifies Causeway Point at 1 Woodlands Square, connected to Woodlands regional bus interchange and the MRT interchange. This makes it a clear public retail destination for someone arriving by Service 161.

A family could choose one meal, a household errand or a film, subject to current tenant opening and booking. A large mall contains many independent businesses, so do not assume every service follows the shopping centre’s general opening hours.

The bus stop code is 46009 Woodlands Int, not ‘Causeway Point shop entrance’. Follow signage from the interchange to the desired level and retail unit. If meeting someone, select a particular floor or landmark rather than just saying ‘inside Causeway Point’.

A trip from Hougang may involve a substantial ride, so choose a reason that makes the journey worthwhile for the group. It is equally valid to use the bus for a family visit or an onward MRT transfer rather than shopping.

For the way home, consult SBS Transit’s Woodlands-to-Hougang timetable and verify the actual boarding berth. Do not assume the last bus from Woodlands departs at the same time as the last one from Hougang.

Woodlands Regional Library: a clear reading alternative to a shopping trip

The National Library Board places Woodlands Regional Library within Woodlands Civic Centre, 900 South Woodlands Drive, a separate building in the town-centre area. It is accessible from the MRT/interchange precinct by a pedestrian route, which must be checked for the exact entrance and any accessibility needs.

The library provides an indoor reading and learning destination that does not require purchasing items at the mall. Readers can choose books for children and adults, check community programmes or simply enjoy time in a public learning space, subject to current NLB operating rules.

For a family, the journey can have one learning objective: find a book about nature, transport or history, then discuss one question it answers. The purpose is to gain understanding, not to collect every book or force a child to complete a long worksheet after travelling across the island.

Do not assume NLB events or specialised rooms are open to anyone at every hour. Check the specific programme, registration conditions and floor before departure. A public library can have facility-specific hours and event requirements.

A route plan should include the correct way back to the Woodlands interchange. If an elderly relative or mobility-aid user is involved, select a verified pedestrian path instead of using an old accessibility map without checking for current works.

Woodlands sports facilities: real options, with real operating conditions

Sport Singapore lists Woodlands Sport Centre at 1 Woodlands Street 13, as well as a swimming complex at 3 Woodlands Street 13. These are separate addresses from Woodlands Interchange and require a new travel or pedestrian leg.

The Woodlands Swimming Complex official page states Thursday as its normal weekly maintenance closure, with a stated public-holiday exception. A swimming plan should verify its actual operating hours, admission requirements and water conditions before travelling with children.

For a gym or court sport, check the specific venue and booking. A sport centre can be described as open on a website while a given court is booked or an individual facility is unavailable. Do not convert the general opening window into a promise of a free session.

If a child wants swimming, compare the door-to-door journey from Hougang with a closer available pool before deciding on a long Service 161 ride. A novelty outing can be fun, but it should not be mistaken for the most convenient weekly sports routine.

This is an example of choosing an attraction based on what the family actually wants, not just because the final bus terminal is far from home.

Woodlands Waterfront Park, Mandai and the Checkpoint: three things 161 does not directly serve

There is a temptation to list every northern landmark under a Woodlands bus route. That would mislead readers. The Service 161 stop table ends at Woodlands Interchange, with stops on Woodlands Avenue 2. It does not call at the Woodlands Waterfront Park entrance, Mandai Wildlife Reserve or the Woodlands Checkpoint.

NParks places Woodlands Waterfront Park along Admiralty Road West, with Woodlands North MRT as a nearby station. The park has a waterfront promenade, playground and jetty, but a visit from the Bus 161 terminus requires a separate onward connection and entrance plan.

Likewise, Mandai’s wildlife parks have their own transport arrangements. Do not assume a bus crossing northern Singapore on an expressway will stop beside the zoo or any wildlife attraction. The correct approach starts with Mandai’s officially published transport options for the specific park and ticket time.

The Woodlands Checkpoint is an international border facility with immigration and security procedures. Bus 161 is not a cross-border service merely because it terminates in Woodlands. Travellers to Johor Bahru must use appropriate authorised routes and immigration requirements separately.

These exclusions are useful information. A reader can still use 161 to reach Woodlands town centre, then make a deliberate onward connection if needed. That is different from promising a direct ride to every destination in the north.

Compare Bus 161 with rail and plan the return intentionally

Bus 161 can be particularly convenient for someone whose home is near its Hougang or Sengkang road stops and whose destination is near Woodlands Interchange. It is not necessarily faster than the MRT for a traveller already at a station; real road traffic, bus waiting and pedestrian access all affect door-to-door timing.

The expressway portion means the ride has few intermediate options to change plans. Before boarding, check the destination display, keep the correct stop in mind and decide whether anyone in the group needs rest, food or a bathroom before the journey.

For the return, the service operates Woodlands to Hougang, with different stopping codes. Confirm that you are boarding the Hougang-bound bus at the authorised berth and that the chosen stop after the expressway matches your actual home or transfer.

A route is successful when the chosen destination and final pedestrian connection are understood. Riding to the terminus without knowing where the mall, library or sports facility is located would be a less complete plan.

Finally, published terminal first and last bus times apply to departures from those terminals. Do not turn them into guessed arrival times at an intermediate Sengkang stop or a guarantee that a service will be on time during road congestion.

Three sample outings worth considering

Causeway Point shopping or meal

Board Service 161 at Hougang Central Interchange 64009 or a suitable intermediate stop. Stay on through the expressway to Woodlands Int 46009, follow signs to Causeway Point at 1 Woodlands Square, complete the selected task and check the Woodlands-to-Hougang return before the group becomes tired.

Woodlands Regional Library reading outing

Use Bus 161 to Woodlands Int, then the actual pedestrian link to Woodlands Civic Centre. Check the NLB facility’s current hours and choose a reading purpose. Return by the route that suits the group; a long trip can still be worthwhile with a simple goal.

A confirmed Woodlands sports activity

Only after verifying an available ActiveSG sports session, take Service 161 to Woodlands town centre and use a separate mapped connection to the facility on Woodlands Street 13. Include changing time and the correct return stop. Do not promise a swimming session on normal Thursday maintenance day.

What to watch for: common journey repairs

  • Assuming many expressway stops: 161 has a long non-stop section between Punggol Road and Woodlands Avenue 2.
  • Wrong Punggol location: a Punggol Road stop is not the Punggol MRT or Punggol Coast interchange.
  • Wrong Sengkang berth: 161 uses a roadside Sengkang MRT-area stop, not the interchange berth allocated to other services such as 86.
  • Wrong Woodlands MRT side: outward station stop codes differ from return; read the sign and direction.
  • Confusing Causeway Point and Woodlands Civic Centre: mall and library have separate buildings and entrances.
  • Swimming facility closed: Woodlands Swimming Complex has weekly Thursday maintenance, with exceptions to verify.
  • Assuming direct Mandai or Waterfront access: those attractions require separate onward routes from Woodlands town centre.
  • Border confusion: Bus 161 does not itself cross into Malaysia or stop at the border immigration checkpoint.
  • Last bus planning: use the timetable for the Woodlands-to-Hougang direction when returning.
