How to Plan Thaipusam from Punggol
These steps follow the 2026 arrangements. The 2027 details may differ, so check thaipusam.sg once they are out.
- Watch thaipusam.sg from December 2026. In 2026, Milk Pot registration opened on 10 December 2025, and Spike and Chariot Kavadi registration on 14 December 2025.
- Choose your offering and check who can carry it. Under-16s may carry only Milk Pots or Milk Kavadis and may not be pierced. Spike and Chariot Kavadi bearers need a representative aged 21 or above.
- See your doctor first if you have a health condition. The organisers ask anyone with diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure to consult a doctor before carrying a kavadi.
- Register online. In 2026, Spike and Chariot Kavadi fees were paid at Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple. Both temples ran help desks from 6pm to 8.30pm for anyone who needed help registering.
- Book a Milk Pot time slot and keep to it. In 2026, devotees who arrived before their slot were refused entry.
- Plan the journey. Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple is on Serangoon Road, in the area served by the North East Line from Punggol. Check a journey planner for the best station and walking route.
- Brief your supporters. Keep the group small, dress appropriately and follow the marshals. Every kavadi must be tagged.

Which Situation Fits You
You are carrying a milk pot
If you are bringing your own milk pot, prepare it at home, as the 2026 rules asked. The brochure advised avoiding slots between 12am and 3am on the eve-night, when many devotees were expected. Milk Kavadi entry ran from 8pm on the eve, with exit by 12pm on Thaipusam day.
You are carrying a Spike or Chariot Kavadi
In 2026, morning entry ran from 2am to 9am and afternoon entry from 9am to 3pm, with exit by 5pm. Spike and Chariot Kavadi bearers entered Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple via Race Course Road. Tonsuring was not allowed on the eve or on the day itself.
You are supporting a devotee
Keep the entourage small and follow the marshals. Sri Thendayuthapani Temple’s 2023 guidance for devotees did not allow face or body painting, disguises, alcohol or smoking along the route. In 2026, lunch was served at the open field opposite Sri Thendayuthapani Temple from 12pm to 3pm on Thaipusam day.
You are helping an elderly relative register
The help desks at both temples, open 6pm to 8.30pm in 2026, are the easiest route. Bring the devotee’s details with you. Milk Pot devotees collecting from Sri Thendayuthapani Temple entered via River Valley Road.
You are working or studying that Friday
Thaipusam is not a public holiday, so plan leave early if you are taking part. The eve falls on Thursday 21 January 2027.
You are celebrating Pongal
Tabla! describes Pongal as a four-day harvest festival marking the sun’s move into the Tamil month of Thai, with thanks offered to the sun, cattle and nature. In 2026, it reported a Pongal light-up by LISHA at Poli@Clive Street in Little India from 10 January to 8 February, with dance, percussion and a cattle display, and an Indian Heritage Centre open house with free activities. These are third-party reports, so check live. The 2027 Pongal programmes had not been announced as of October 2026.
Thaipusam Costs, Rules and the Law
Offering fees in 2026, from the official brochure:
- Milk Pot, self-prepared: $20
- Milk Pot, temple-prepared: $25
- Milk Kavadi and Cradle Kavadi: $40
- Spike and Chariot Kavadi: $100
The 2027 fees had not been published as of October 2026. Registered devotees are given priority.
The procession runs under a police permit. Sri Thendayuthapani Temple’s 2023 guidance notes that breaching permit conditions under the Public Order Act 2009 can bring a fine of up to $5,000. The same guidance says public drinking is barred from 10.30pm to 7am daily, with extra restrictions in the Little India Liquor Control Zone on weekends and public holidays. Rules on music for 2027 had not been published as of October 2026; check the thaipusam.sg advisories once they are out.
Neighbour’s Tips
- Register early. In 2026, Spike and Chariot Kavadi registration closed on 25 January and Milk Pot registration on 30 January, the day before the eve.
- Arrive on time, not early. Milk Pot devotees who turned up before their slot were turned away in 2026.
- Give the doctor’s visit time. Book it in December if you plan to carry a kavadi and have a health condition.
- Supporters need comfortable shoes. The route is about 4km from temple to temple.
- Watch the Silver Chariot on the eve. In 2026 it left Sri Thendayuthapani Temple at 5am, set off from Sri Layan Sithi Vinayagar Temple at 5pm and returned at about 9pm. Times can change.
- Mark the other festivals. HEB’s calendar also lists Skantha Shasti from Tuesday 10 November 2026 and Thirukarthigai Deepam on Tuesday 24 November 2026.
- Stock up locally for Pongal. Our guide to Asian and international grocery shops in Punggol may save a trip.
If It’s Urgent or Gets Worse
Call 995 straight away if a devotee or supporter faints, becomes confused or shows signs of heat illness, and alert the nearest marshal. Stay with them until help arrives. Call 999 for the police in an emergency.
If someone in your group has been drinking, keep them away from the route. Sri Thendayuthapani Temple’s 2023 guidance says anyone who has consumed alcohol will be asked to leave.
