This page is part of eduKate Punggol’s When You Need Help in Punggol, our practical guides for life’s occasions, big and small. It covers the signs of a gambling or alcohol problem, the helplines, how to block access to gambling, where to find specialist and community help near Punggol, and support for families.

Quick answer

  • Talk to someone: the National Problem Gambling Helpline, 1800-666 8668 (daily 8am–11pm, anonymous if you wish), or the NAMS All Addictions Helpline, 6-7326837 (daily 8.30am–9pm, including public holidays).
  • Block gambling: Self-Exclusion for yourself (age 21 and over), or a Family Exclusion Order for a family member. ServiceSG Centre One Punggol can help you submit a self-exclusion application.
  • Specialist help: the NAMS Clinic at the Institute of Mental Health in Buangkok. Treatment is voluntary, and walk-ins are welcome.
  • Counselling: WE CARE Community Services charges on a sliding scale, and Punggol Family Service Centre is on 6435 5323.
  • Emergencies: signs of alcohol poisoning, call 995. Family violence, call 999 or NAVH on 1800-777-0000. Thoughts of suicide, call SOS on 1767 or CareText on 9151 1767.

What to Do First

Start wherever you are. You do not need to have every answer before you call.

  1. Make sure everyone is safe. If someone shows signs of alcohol poisoning, such as a lack of muscle coordination, impaired judgement or coma, lay them on their side and call 995. If anyone at home is being threatened or hurt, call 999.
  2. Make one call. The gambling helpline is staffed by trained para-counsellors, and callers can choose to stay anonymous. The NAMS helpline covers all addictions.
  3. Look honestly at the signs. HealthHub’s list for gambling includes borrowing often, taking salary advances, cashing in savings or insurance, and cheating or stealing to gamble or pay debts. For alcohol, it includes struggling to cut down, strong cravings, drinking despite problems at home or work, and needing more to get the same effect.
  4. If gambling is the problem, block access. Apply for Self-Exclusion with Singpass. It takes effect immediately after you submit.
  5. If a family member gambles and will not stop, consider a Family Exclusion Order. The details are below.
  6. See a professional. Walk in to the NAMS Clinic, book counselling with WE CARE, or start with your family doctor or the polyclinic.
  7. Get support for yourself. NAMS says that if you live with someone who is not ready to seek help, “you don’t have to feel alone”. WE CARE also counsels family members.

Which Situation Fits You

You are worried about your own gambling

Call the helpline first; you do not have to give your name. If you want a barrier, Self-Exclusion can cover the casinos at Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands, jackpot machine rooms at private clubs, and Singapore Pools online betting. You can apply online with Singpass, or get help at ServiceSG Centre One Punggol.

A family member gambles and will not stop

A spouse, child, parent or sibling, including adoptive and step relatives, can apply online for a Family Exclusion Order with Singpass. It covers casinos, jackpot rooms and Singapore Pools online betting together. NCPG contacts you within three working days, and a hearing before a Committee of Assessors is usually scheduled about two weeks from the application. The outcome is sent by courier the next working day. If serious harm is imminent, a Provisional Family Exclusion Order may be issued.

Please know that the person you apply about is told of the hearing and its outcome. Supporting documents can include casino entry levy tickets, police reports and bank statements, as JPEG, PNG or PDF files of up to 5MB.

You are worried about drinking

HealthHub says there is no safe amount of alcohol that does not affect health. If you drink, its limits are two standard drinks a day for men and one for women. A standard drink is 10g of alcohol: about 330ml of 5% beer, 100ml of 15% wine or 30ml of 40% spirits. HealthHub advises people with alcohol dependence to seek advice from a counsellor or healthcare provider.

Someone you love is not ready for help

You can still get help for yourself. The NAMS helpline and WE CARE’s family counselling are open to family members, and Punggol Family Service Centre can support the household. Our Family Service Centres guide explains what they offer.

Debts are piling up

Money trouble often comes with gambling. For urgent financial help, call the ComCare Hotline on 1800-222-0000 (7am to midnight daily), or MSF’s consolidated hotline 1800-111-2222 (say “ComCare”). If you are being harassed by an unlicensed moneylender, call the police. Our guide to bankruptcy and the Debt Repayment Scheme explains the formal options.

It is gaming, smoking or vaping

See our guides to too much gaming and quitting smoking or vaping.

Costs and Rules

  • Helplines: free, though airtime charges apply when calling 1800 lines from a mobile.
  • Self-Exclusion: for people aged 21 and over. It takes effect immediately, and you must wait at least one year before you can ask to revoke it. NCPG’s pages do not mention a fee.
  • Family Exclusion Order: NCPG’s pages do not mention a fee. The person named is notified.
  • WE CARE counselling: a sliding scale from $30 to $140 a session, depending on your finances. WE CARE says clients facing financial stress will still receive help. It replies within three business days, and group therapy needs registration and an intake session first.
  • NAMS: treatment is voluntary. Walk-ins are welcome, but at busy times you may be given an appointment instead. Fees are not published, so ask when you call.

Neighbour’s Tips

  • Families can act first. A Family Exclusion Order does not need the gambler’s agreement, but they will be told.
  • Gather papers before you apply. Casino entry levy tickets, bank statements and police reports all support a family application.
  • Get help applying close to home. ServiceSG Centre One Punggol, beside Punggol MRT, can help with self-exclusion forms.
  • Call late if you need to. The gambling helpline runs until 11pm every day.
  • Arrive early at NAMS. The last morning walk-in registration is 11am.
  • Know what to do for alcohol poisoning. HealthHub says to lay the person on their side and call for immediate medical attention, which means 995.
  • Look after yourself too. WE CARE’s family counselling and the national mindline, 1771, are there for family members as well.

If It’s Urgent or Gets Worse

HealthHub lists the signs of alcohol poisoning as poor muscle coordination, blurred or double vision, a drop in body temperature, low blood sugar, low blood pressure, impaired judgement and coma. It warns that alcohol poisoning can be deadly. Lay the person on their side and call 995.

If drinking or gambling has led to violence at home, call 999 if anyone is in immediate danger, or NAVH on 1800-777-0000, 24 hours. If you or someone close has thoughts of suicide, call SOS on 1767 or message CareText on WhatsApp at 9151 1767, any time. The national mindline, 1771, is also open 24 hours.
