An HFMD outbreak at a Punggol preschool does not automatically mean mandatory closure. ECDA says the Communicable Diseases Agency (CDA) generally no longer requires preschool closure for HFMD, except in exceptional circumstances.
ECDA explains that closure has limited effectiveness because the virus can be introduced again after reopening. Its guidance instead emphasises early detection, isolation of cases, and personal and environmental hygiene.
Check your own preschool’s current notice for the arrangements affecting your child. An open centre is not a medical clearance for an unwell child, and this general guidance does not override a specific official direction.
CHAPTER 1 OF 3
Read the current policy with its exception
The ECDA FAQ on HFMD closures retains an exceptional-circumstances qualification. It should not be shortened to a claim that a preschool can never close.
The same FAQ says CDA and ECDA monitor cases, guide centres and work together on infectious-disease management. Here, CDA means the Communicable Diseases Agency, not a Child Development Account.
CHAPTER 2 OF 3
Ask what the centre is doing now
Ask how the centre is communicating updates, what arrangements apply to the affected group and whom parents should contact with questions. Use the dated centre notice rather than an old message forwarded from elsewhere.
If a message is unclear, ask whether it describes a confirmed closure, an attendance arrangement or general precautions. Those are different things for family planning.
CHAPTER 3 OF 3
Keep your child’s return decision separate
If your child is unwell, obtain appropriate medical advice and follow the applicable attendance instructions. Do not use the absence of a closure notice as the only reason to send your child back.
This guide does not diagnose HFMD or prescribe an isolation period. For questions about your child’s recovery, speak with the treating clinician and preschool.
Information checked on 17 October 2026. Follow current official guidance and obtain professional advice appropriate to your child’s circumstances.
