Common Putat on Punggol Heritage Trail | Hanging Flowers and a Coastal Tree Story

Common Putat is one of the native trees named in Punggol Heritage Trail’s SG60 planting. Learning its name gives a local walk a new question: how are the flowers arranged, rather than simply what colour are they?

The species is Barringtonia racemosa. Its long, hanging flowering shoots can make a memorable reference image, even when a tree you visit has no flowers visible.

Begin with the planting story and the official species record. This guide does not locate a verified individual or promise a flowering display; it helps you understand what to compare when suitable details are in view.

CHAPTER 1 OF 4

1. Connect the planting with Punggol’s coastal landscape

Back to contents

The NParks opening announcement records residents planting 60 native coastal trees along the trail on 23 August 2025. Common Putat was among the species named.

That is a useful connection between a present-day community activity and a coastal planting theme. It is different from saying that every tree beside the trail has survived from an earlier kampung landscape.

Look at interpretation as you walk and note whether a name refers to a planted species, a conserved individual or a broader habitat story. These details help a familiar route become more interesting without needing a long list of names.

2. Look at the flowering shoot as a whole

Back to contents

The NParks Common Putat record describes hanging flowering shoots up to a metre long, with flowers bearing many fine white, pink or red stamens. Its botanical account identifies the arrangement as a raceme.

Imagine a main line carrying separate stalked flowers. In a sketch, draw that line before adding the individual blooms. It helps distinguish the organisation of the whole shoot from the shape of one flower.

NParks records night-opening flowers. An unremarkable daytime view therefore need not match a photograph of open blooms. Choose a comfortable, permitted visiting time; a botanical feature is not a reason to enter somewhere outside its access hours.

3. Use leaves and ecological references to widen the picture

Back to contents

The record describes alternate leaves with slightly toothed margins and notes bat and moth pollination. It also lists the species as native to Singapore and locally Critically Endangered.

Treat the pollination account as a relationship to learn about, not a promise that a bat or moth will appear beside you. If you observe an animal near flowers, describe what you actually saw before deciding what role it played.

A good family question is why the entire flowering arrangement might matter to a visitor, an illustrator and an animal in different ways. Each is looking at the same plant with a different purpose.

4. Make a flower-architecture page for the next walk

Back to contents

Divide a notebook page into ‘whole shoot’, ‘one flower’ and ‘what I still want to check’. Use a direct sketch when possible and label any drawing copied from the official photographs as reference-based.

Our Punggol flower-photography guide can help you capture context and detail as separate images. Let distance remain part of the photograph rather than pulling a flowering shoot closer.

Keep plant material in place and check current access information through the relevant park pages. Our Heritage Trail guide offers the wider outing context; this stop can be as short as one new thing noticed.
