Punggol residents disposing of leftover paint should identify the paint type before choosing a disposal route. Water-based wall paint, oil-based paint and aerosol paint are not interchangeable waste items; read the original label or ask the manufacturer.
Nippon Paint’s Singapore guidance says water-based paint must be completely dried or solidified before it goes into regular household trash. It directs oil-based paint to an NEA-licensed toxic industrial waste collector. Do not pour liquid paint into a sink, toilet or drain.
An empty paint can is a separate question from the paint inside it. NEA’s recycling guide lists metal paint cans with no liquid paint remaining; that is not permission to place a partly full tin in a Punggol blue recycling bin.

Read the label without guessing
Keep the product name and original container available when asking for advice. If the label is unreadable or the contents are unknown, do not assume it is ordinary water-based wall paint.
A photograph of the label can help a manufacturer or contractor answer the right question. Avoid opening, smelling closely or mixing unfamiliar leftovers to identify them.
Confirm the water-based disposal procedure
For a confirmed water-based product, follow the manufacturer’s complete instructions for drying or solidification, including ventilation and keeping it away from children, pets and heat.
Do not put a can of liquid paint out with ordinary refuse. If there is too much paint to manage safely at home, ask the manufacturer or your painting contractor about an appropriate service.
Check the specialist route for oil-based paint
NEA’s toxic waste control page provides access to its current list of licensed collectors. Ask a collector whether it accepts your product and quantity, and obtain collection instructions and any quotation first.
Do not assume a general bulky-item removal booking includes paint, solvents or renovation chemicals. Agree on the disposal responsibility with the painting contractor before work finishes.
Keep spray cans and reusable paint distinct
Do not puncture or crush aerosol paint cans. For a can that still contains product, seek the manufacturer’s handling advice rather than treating it as an empty metal container.
If you intend to keep suitable paint for touch-ups, retain its label and follow product-specific storage instructions. A note recording the room and colour can prevent a future household clear-out from becoming another identification exercise.
