Common Sendudok in Punggol | Flower and Leaf Identification

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

Common Sendudok is a flowering shrub worth learning about on a Punggol nature walk. NParks named it among the plants added along Punggol Heritage Trail.

The species is Melastoma malabathricum, also called Singapore Rhododendron. Its magenta-pink flowers and prominent lengthwise leaf veins give beginners useful features to compare.

A pink flower alone is not enough for a confident name. Look at the foliage too, and keep the identification tentative when the view is incomplete.

CHAPTER 1 OF 4

1. Check the botanical name and visible foliage

Back to contents

The NParks Common Sendudok record lists its common names and describes opposite, lance-shaped leaves with three prominent veins.

Use the scientific name to connect a sign, photograph and reference. Common names are helpful introductions, but they can be less precise.

Trace the visible vein pattern in a sketch without plucking a leaf. If the detail is hidden, an official image can help you learn what to look for next time.

CHAPTER 2 OF 4

2. Compare the flower with the leaves

Back to contents

NParks describes flowers with five magenta-pink petals and ten long anthers. These are features to check if the plant is flowering.

Do not expect every shrub to carry an open flower on your visit. Record whether you saw a flower, a bud or neither.

With a child, compare one colour feature and one shape feature. That makes the exercise more useful than collecting a list of flower colours.

CHAPTER 3 OF 4

3. Use the heritage trail connection accurately

Back to contents

The official trail opening announcement names Common Sendudok among added planting. It is local context for the species, not a live flowering report.

A planted species list does not identify every individual shrub along the trail. Check interpretation and references instead of applying the same label to all pink flowers.

Notice how a shrub occupies a different level from the taller trees around it. Describe the arrangement you can see without guessing the full planting plan.

4. Observe without turning the stop into collecting

Back to contents

Leave flowers, foliage and fruit undisturbed. This is a recognition guide, not advice to forage or prepare plant remedies.

Our Punggol Heritage Trail guide can help you keep the outing short and manageable.

Write down the date, the visible features and one question. If the name remains uncertain, that is a useful record too; check it later with the official reference.
