Do all Punggol preschools have to offer phonics, spelling or Hanyu Pinyin programmes? ECDA says these named programmes are not compulsory in preschools.
Preschools must nevertheless have programmes and activities that promote language and literacy. Ask how the centre supports these areas for your child’s age group.
When comparing preschools, look beyond whether the brochure uses a particular programme label. Ask what children actually experience, what the learning purpose is and whether any advertised course is part of the core programme or an optional add-on.

CHAPTER 1 OF 4
Start with the official distinction
The ECDA language-programme answer separates named courses from the requirement to promote language and literacy.
A useful question is: “How does your programme support language and literacy at this age?” Ask for an example rather than relying on a yes-or-no course checklist.
CHAPTER 2 OF 4
Ask how an activity works
If a centre advertises phonics or Hanyu Pinyin, ask what the sessions involve and how staff describe progress. Confirm which age group the activity serves.
Avoid assuming that two courses with the same name have identical content, frequency or expectations. The centre’s explanation supplies the relevant details.
CHAPTER 3 OF 4
Check inclusion and charges
Ask whether the advertised activity is included in the programme fee or offered separately. Read the actual terms before agreeing to an additional payment.
For supplementary activities, see our official source on optional preschool enrichment.
CHAPTER 4 OF 4
Connect the discussion to your child
Tell teachers what your child enjoys or finds difficult, then ask how the programme can support participation. Keep the discussion specific to observed needs.
Save the explanation alongside other programme information so your family can compare centres on understandable details.
