Waterway Ridges became a Punggol pilot precinct for integrating Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters features into public housing. A 2017 research paper examined stormwater control in the four-hectare development, a collaboration involving PUB and HDB.
The history of Waterway Ridges includes rain gardens, bioretention lawns and swales, which made its shared landscape part of the drainage design. The project brought water management into a residential precinct rather than treating greenery only as decoration.
The 2017 study’s findings were based on uncalibrated models, with monitoring still planned at publication. That qualification matters: the paper is evidence of a design and research programme, not a guarantee of measured performance under every future storm.

PUB’s certification register places Waterway Ridges in the 2012–2014 group. That date range describes certification, while 2017 is the publication year of the research discussed here.
The Development Asia account identifies the precinct as an example of extending ABC Waters design into public housing. The historical shift was from a prominent waterway project towards water-sensitive design within an estate.
The research, Effectiveness of ABC Waters Design Features for Runoff Quantity Control in Urban Singapore, describes vegetated swales and gravel swales alongside rain gardens and bioretention lawns.
Its account explains that rougher, planted channels slow runoff compared with concrete-lined drains. Gravel storage and controlled outlets were also incorporated into the precinct’s system.

The authors stated that monitoring had not begun when the paper was published. They treated the model results as preliminary and identified calibration as a necessary step towards validated results.
That is useful local history: it records what planners built, what researchers investigated and what remained to be checked. Our interpretation is that Punggol’s environmental story includes experiments and evaluation as well as finished landscapes.
