Greendale Secondary School began teaching in Punggol on 2 January 2006, welcoming 320 Secondary 1 students. Its official opening followed in 2007. These are separate milestones in the history of Punggol’s schools: the first cohort arrived before the ceremonial opening.
The name Greendale connects the school to its surroundings. The school explains that “green” recalls Punggol’s rustic greenery and waterfront setting, while “dale” refers to Edgedale Plains. Its founding principal was Mrs Mary Koh.
This Greendale Secondary School history follows its pioneer years and leadership transitions. It draws on the school’s own record.

Mrs Mary Koh and a founding team of department heads and teachers prepared the school in 2005.
This distinction helps former students identify the pioneer cohort. A school can be established through preparation before its first teaching day, and officially opened after lessons have already begun. For Greendale, those stages belong to different years.
Dr Teo Chee Hean, then Minister for Defence, officiated at the 2007 opening.
The school records principal transitions to Mr Mark Gerard Minjoot in December 2008, Ms Amy Ng in December 2014 and Mr Sulaiman Mohamad Yusof in December 2021. These dates mark changes in institutional leadership, not new founding dates.

Historical interpretation: Greendale’s story adds a school community to Punggol’s redevelopment timeline. The meaningful unit is not simply a completed building: it is the group of pupils and staff who began creating routines, activities and shared memories there.
For someone investigating a school name, geographical associations provide a useful starting point. Names can preserve how a place was imagined when an institution began, even as its surroundings change.
For a family heritage project, label photographs by cohort year and event. A 2006 classroom photograph and a 2007 opening photograph document different moments in the same school’s early life.
