Bus service 85 was introduced on 1 January 2006, connecting Punggol Temporary Bus Interchange with Yishun. Its original route travelled through eastern Sengkang before using the TPE and SLE towards Lentor Avenue and Yishun.
The history of Punggol bus 85 includes a significant Sengkang rerouting in May 2010. The changed path used Sengkang West Way and Jalan Kayu, although an original-route arrangement initially remained for weekday morning journeys towards Yishun.
The revised routing became permanent on 19 November 2012. Other milestones include the 2016 Go-Ahead handover and the 2019 move into Yishun Integrated Transport Hub. The northern destination remained familiar while the journey changed.

Land Transport Guru’s historical routing record shows bus 85 leaving Punggol through Punggol Place, Punggol Central and Punggol East. It continued through Sengkang East Drive, Rivervale and Compassvale before reaching Sengkang East Road.
The 2006 route then entered the expressways towards Yishun. Comparing that path with later maps explains why an older passenger might remember a different journey through Sengkang.
The service chronology dates the amendment to 23 May 2010. The weekday morning exception towards Yishun meant that the change was not initially identical for every trip.
The permanent November 2012 amendment is therefore a separate milestone. It matters when interpreting a route map or timetable from the intervening period.

The chronology records wheelchair-accessible designation on 9 June 2013, the move to Yishun Temporary Interchange on 14 March 2015 and the Go-Ahead transfer on 4 September 2016.
The service moved to Yishun Integrated Transport Hub on 8 September 2019. These endpoint changes belonged to Yishun’s development but also changed the experience of passengers starting in Punggol.
