Implied multiplication after PSLE is a useful post-PSLE Mathematics bridge because it connects a familiar idea to the more precise language and reasoning expected in Secondary 1.
The wider route begins with After PSLE — Should My Child Start Secondary 1 Maths Early?. If the same mistake keeps returning, use the Punggol Mathematics diagnostic guide to decide whether the bottleneck is fluency, interpretation, strategy or execution before adding more practice.
At eduKatePunggol, Mathematics is taught in focused small groups of up to three students in 1.5-hour lessons near Punggol MRT. The aim is not to rush ahead but to make one important relationship stable enough that later work feels familiar.

The short answer: algebra often leaves out the multiplication sign
3x means 3 × x. The expression ab means a × b. The expression 2(x + 1) means 2 multiplied by the whole bracket x + 1.
The multiplication is still there even though the × symbol is omitted.
Why algebra hides ×
The ordinary multiplication symbol × can look too much like the variable x.
Algebra therefore uses adjacency—placing symbols next to one another—to show multiplication compactly.
Worked example: 5x when x = 4
5x means 5 × x.
If x = 4, then 5x = 5 × 4 = 20.
It does not mean 5 + 4.
Two letters side by side also multiply
If a = 3 and b = 7, then ab = a × b = 21.
Similarly, 2ab means 2 × a × b.
A number before a bracket multiplies the whole bracket
2(x + 3) means 2 multiplied by x + 3.
Using the distributive law, 2(x + 3) = 2x + 6.
It does not mean 2x + 3 because the multiplier applies to every term inside the bracket.
A variable before a bracket also multiplies
x(x + 4) means x multiplied by x + 4.
Expanding gives x² + 4x.
The first product x × x becomes x².
Do not confuse 3x with x³
3x means three copies of x added, or 3 multiplied by x.
x³ means x multiplied by itself three times.
The coefficient and exponent do different jobs.
The invisible coefficient 1
x itself means 1x. Likewise, -x means -1x.
This connects implied multiplication to Coefficient 1 and -1 After PSLE.
Order of operations still applies
In 2x², the exponent applies to x before multiplication by 2.
If x = 3, then 2x² = 2 × 9 = 18.
This is not the same as (2x)², which would be 36.
A notation-reading routine
- Look for symbols placed directly next to one another.
- Translate adjacency into multiplication.
- Identify any brackets being multiplied.
- Separate coefficients from exponents.
- Substitute values with brackets when negative.
- Then follow the usual order of operations.
Independent practice with answers
- If x=4, find 3x.
- If a=2,b=5, find ab.
- Expand 4(x+2).
- Expand x(x+3).
- If x=3, compare 2x² and (2x)².
Answers: 12; 10; 4x+8; x²+3x; 18 and 36.
How a 3-pax class helps
One student may read adjacency as addition. Another may understand 3x but not ab. A third may handle both but forget that a bracket is one multiplied object.
A tutor can make the hidden multiplication visible until the notation becomes natural.
Frequently asked questions
Why not write × everywhere?
Because adjacency is the standard compact algebra convention and avoids confusion between the multiplication sign and the variable x.
Does xy mean a new variable called xy?
In ordinary algebra notation, xy means x multiplied by y unless a context explicitly defines a symbol differently.
