Mathematics Tuition in Punggol | Midpoint of Two Coordinates After PSLE — Average the x-Values and y-Values Separately

Running and cycling path at Punggol Waterway Park beside Waterway Point

Midpoint of two coordinates after PSLE is a useful post-PSLE Mathematics bridge because it connects a familiar idea to the more precise language and reasoning expected in Secondary 1.

The wider route begins with After PSLE — Should My Child Start Secondary 1 Maths Early?. If the same mistake keeps returning, use the Punggol Mathematics diagnostic guide to decide whether the bottleneck is fluency, interpretation, strategy or execution before adding more practice.

At eduKatePunggol, Mathematics is taught in focused small groups of up to three students in 1.5-hour lessons near Punggol MRT. The aim is not to rush ahead but to make one important relationship stable enough that later work feels familiar.

The short answer: average x with x, and y with y

For points (x₁,y₁) and (x₂,y₂), the midpoint lies halfway in the horizontal direction and halfway in the vertical direction.

So the midpoint is found by averaging the two x-coordinates and averaging the two y-coordinates separately.

Worked example: (2,4) and (8,10)

Average the x-values: (2 + 8) ÷ 2 = 5.

Average the y-values: (4 + 10) ÷ 2 = 7.

The midpoint is (5,7).

Why averaging works

The number 5 is exactly halfway between 2 and 8 on the x-axis.

The number 7 is exactly halfway between 4 and 10 on the y-axis.

Combining those halfway positions gives the centre of the segment.

Negative coordinates work the same way

Take A=(-4,2) and B=(6,8).

Midpoint x = (-4 + 6) ÷ 2 = 1.

Midpoint y = (2 + 8) ÷ 2 = 5.

So midpoint = (1,5).

Do not average x with y

The x-coordinates describe horizontal position and must be combined with each other.

The y-coordinates describe vertical position and must be combined with each other.

Mixing one x-value with one y-value destroys the coordinate meaning.

A midpoint is not always an integer point

For endpoints (1,2) and (4,6), midpoint x = 2.5 and midpoint y = 4.

The midpoint is (2.5,4). Decimal coordinates are perfectly valid.

Midpoints connect to symmetry

If M is the midpoint of A and B, reflecting A through M lands on B.

That symmetry gives a useful visual check when plotting.

Midpoint on a horizontal or vertical segment

For (2,5) and (10,5), the y-coordinate stays 5 while x averages to 6, so midpoint = (6,5).

For (-3,-4) and (-3,8), x stays -3 while y averages to 2, so midpoint = (-3,2).

A midpoint routine

  1. Write the two endpoints clearly.
  2. Group the x-coordinates together.
  3. Average them.
  4. Group the y-coordinates together.
  5. Average them.
  6. Write the result as an ordered pair.
  7. Plot it and check it looks halfway between the endpoints.

Independent practice with answers

  1. Midpoint of (0,0) and (6,8).
  2. Midpoint of (-2,4) and (8,10).
  3. Midpoint of (3,-5) and (3,7).
  4. Midpoint of (-6,-2) and (2,4).
  5. Can a midpoint contain decimals?

Answers: (3,4); (3,7); (3,1); (-2,1); yes.

How a 3-pax class helps

One student may average all four numbers together. Another may lose a negative sign. A third may calculate correctly but swap x and y in the final ordered pair.

Those are separate coordinate habits and can be repaired independently.

Frequently asked questions

Why do we divide by 2?

Because a midpoint is halfway between two endpoint values.

Does the midpoint have to lie on a grid intersection?

No. It may have fractional or decimal coordinates.
