Summarise does not mean “make the passage shorter.”
It means identify the principal points, preserve their meaning, compress overlapping information and remove detail that is not necessary for the answer.
That difference matters.
A short answer can still be a bad summary if it removes a central idea, distorts the source, adds an inference that was never stated, or gives three examples where one principal point would have been enough.
A long answer can also be a bad summary if it simply retells the original material sentence by sentence.
The examination skill is meaning-preserving compression.
Current Cambridge International guidance defines Summarise as selecting and presenting the main points without detail. AQA GCSE English Language defines it as presenting principal points without detail. Those definitions give this page a clear canonical job. Exact expectations still belong to the learner’s syllabus, especially where summary questions specify a source, number of points, word range or comparison task.
This page owns one narrow examination-performance job: summarise questions across subjects—how to extract the principal points from supplied material, group repeated ideas, preserve the original meaning, remove examples and decoration, use one’s own words where appropriate, avoid added judgement, control length and stop when the source has been compressed without changing its logic.
It does not replace How to Answer Outline Questions in Exams. Outline begins from the requested topic and exposes its structural skeleton. Summarise usually begins from supplied material and asks what principal information survives compression. It also does not replace Describe, which gives a fuller account, or Discuss, which develops multiple strands in depth.
The 50-Second Summarise Route
- Identify the source and task. What material must be summarised, and what aspect of it?
- Find the principal points. Which ideas carry the source?
- Group repetition. Which examples or sentences express the same point?
- Remove low-value detail. Examples, adjectives, anecdotes, statistics and explanations unless essential.
- Preserve relationships. Cause, contrast, sequence, condition or hierarchy if they are part of the meaning.
- Use concise wording. Prefer one accurate sentence over several partial ones.
- Do not add your own judgement.
- Check fidelity. Would the source author recognise the summary as fair?
A compact universal frame is:
source → principal points → grouped meaning → concise restatement → fidelity check.
Mira Copies Half the Passage and Calls It a Summary
Mira is given a passage about why a city changed its transport policy.
The passage contains:
- three examples of worsening congestion;
- two quotations from commuters;
- one paragraph on air pollution;
- one paragraph on unreliable bus times;
- an anecdote about a delayed worker;
- a final proposal for rail and bus investment.
Mira’s first summary is almost as long as the original because she keeps every example.
Her stronger summary is:
The city changed its transport policy because road congestion, pollution and unreliable public transport were worsening daily travel, leading officials to propose greater rail and bus investment.
The examples disappear.
The principal points remain.
Summarising Is Selection Before Writing
Students often begin writing too early.
They read the first sentence, paraphrase it, read the second sentence, paraphrase it, and continue until the answer becomes a shorter version of the original order.
That is sentence-by-sentence reduction.
Summary requires a global view first.
Before writing, ask:
What are the three to five ideas this material is fundamentally carrying?
Then write from those ideas rather than from the source sentence order.
The Principal-Point Test
A point is principal when removing it would materially change the source’s meaning.
Ask of each piece of information:
- Does it introduce a new central idea?
- Does it define the source’s main claim?
- Does it create a major cause, contrast, stage or conclusion?
- Is it repeated because it is structurally important?
- Would removing it misrepresent what the source says?
If yes, it probably belongs in the summary.
Example, Evidence or Principal Point?
A source may contain many pieces of evidence for one principal point.
Example:
- teachers report students arriving tired;
- students say they stay awake past midnight;
- attendance falls after late-night events;
- parents describe difficult morning routines.
These may compress into one principal point:
Insufficient sleep is disrupting students’ morning readiness and attendance.
The summary does not need every witness.
Summarise vs Outline
These commands overlap but are not identical.
A useful working distinction is:
- Outline: set out the main points or characteristics of the requested topic.
- Summarise: select and present the principal points from a larger body of material without detail.
Outline asks, “What is the skeleton of this topic?”
Summarise asks, “What survives when this source is compressed?”
In some specifications the two terms may be treated similarly. Follow the actual syllabus glossary.
Summarise vs Describe
Description gives a fuller account.
Summary deliberately removes most detail.
Describe:
The population is concentrated along the eastern coast, with the highest densities around the capital and two northern port cities, while the western interior contains several sparsely populated mountainous districts.
Summarise:
Population is concentrated in the east and sparse across much of the western interior.
Both can be accurate. They operate at different resolutions.
Summarise vs Explain
A summary preserves reasons already present in the source if they are principal points.
It does not invent or expand mechanisms.
If the source says congestion worsened because car ownership rose while road capacity remained fixed, that causal relationship may need to survive the summary.
But the student should not add an extra theory about induced demand unless the source or task requires it.
Summarise vs Analyse
Summary preserves the source’s meaning.
Analysis interprets relationships or significance.
Summary:
The writer argues that technology improves access but may weaken concentration.
Analysis:
The writer creates a tension between access and attention, suggesting that the value of technology depends on how it is used.
The second sentence adds interpretation.
Summarise vs Discuss
Discuss develops ideas.
Summarise compresses them.
A summary of a debate can state the main positions without developing evidence or counterarguments at length.
Summarise vs Evaluate
Evaluation judges.
Summary does not.
If a source presents a weak argument, the summary still needs to represent that argument fairly before any evaluation begins.
Summarise vs Paraphrase
Paraphrase restates an idea in different words.
Summary selects among ideas as well as rephrasing them.
A paraphrase can be almost as long as the original.
A summary must compress.
The Grouping Move
Summary becomes efficient when repeated details are grouped under one abstract point.
Source details:
- bus delays;
- missed rail connections;
- long queues;
- overcrowded stations.
Grouped point:
Public-transport reliability and capacity are inadequate.
Grouping is the engine of compression.
The Category Move
Several specific examples can belong to one category.
Rent, electricity, wages and transport fees may compress into operating costs.
Rainfall, temperature and wind may compress into climatic conditions.
Fear, uncertainty and distrust may compress into public anxiety if the source genuinely treats them as one theme.
But categories must not erase meaningful distinctions.
Do Not Group What the Source Keeps Separate
Compression can become distortion.
If a source distinguishes cost from affordability, or fear from anger, or reliability from validity, combining them into one vague category can change meaning.
Group repetition.
Preserve genuine distinctions.
The Deletion Test
Delete one sentence from the source mentally.
Does the source’s main meaning change?
If no, the sentence may contain example, decoration or repetition.
If yes, it likely contains a principal point, key relationship or necessary qualification.
The Repetition Test
Writers often repeat a main idea using:
- examples;
- statistics;
- anecdotes;
- quoted voices;
- restatement;
- metaphor;
- conclusion.
The summary usually needs the idea once.
The Example-Removal Rule
Examples are often the first material to remove.
Keep one only when:
- the example is itself the principal point;
- the task asks for examples;
- the example defines the category;
- the example is needed to distinguish two otherwise similar ideas.
Otherwise, compress example to category.
Statistics: Keep the Pattern, Not Every Number
A source may contain many figures.
Summary usually keeps the conclusion the figures establish.
Source:
Usage rose from 41% to 48%, then 57%, then 66% over four survey waves.
Summary:
Usage increased steadily across the survey period.
If the magnitude is a principal point, keep the start and end values.
Quotations: Preserve Meaning, Not Decoration
Summary questions usually reward content rather than quotation quantity.
If a source says residents described the road as “a daily trap,” “an hour of wasted life” and “the city’s slowest kilometre,” the principal point may be that residents experience severe daily congestion.
The colourful language can disappear unless the task asks about language.
The Relationship Preservation Rule
Compression must preserve important relationships.
- cause;
- contrast;
- sequence;
- condition;
- exception;
- hierarchy;
- problem → solution;
- claim → evidence.
If the source says A occurs only when B is present, a summary that says “A occurs” has distorted the meaning.
Preserve Cause When Cause Is Principal
Source:
Flood risk has risen because urban growth increased impermeable surfaces while drainage capacity changed little.
Poor summary:
Flood risk has risen.
Better:
Flood risk has increased because urbanisation raised surface runoff without equivalent drainage expansion.
The causal relationship is principal information.
Preserve Contrast When Contrast Is Principal
Source:
Remote work improves flexibility but can weaken informal collaboration.
Poor summary:
Remote work improves flexibility.
The source’s tension disappears.
Better:
Remote work increases flexibility while creating collaboration risks.
Preserve Sequence When Order Matters
A process summary should keep the essential order.
Preparation → treatment → measurement → review may be compressible.
Measurement → preparation → treatment is not the same process.
Preserve Conditions
Source:
The strategy works well in dense areas with frequent public transport but has limited effect where alternatives to driving are weak.
Summary:
The strategy is most effective where practical transport alternatives already exist.
The condition survives compression.
Preserve Important Exceptions
“Most,” “except,” “unless,” “only when” and “however” can carry more meaning than entire examples.
Removing an exception can turn a qualified claim into an absolute one.
That is not compression.
It is distortion.
Use Your Own Words Without Changing the Idea
Many summary tasks expect the learner to process the source rather than copy it.
But “own words” is not a licence to become vague.
Technical terms may need to remain because replacing them with a loose synonym can change meaning.
For example, “correlation” is not identical to “cause.” “Inflation” is not identical to “high prices.” “Validity” is not identical to “accuracy.”
Paraphrase wording.
Preserve concepts.
The Compression Ladder
- Raw source: every detail present.
- Marked source: principal points highlighted.
- Grouped source: repeated details combined.
- Outline: principal points listed.
- Summary draft: points written as concise connected prose.
- Compression pass: repetition removed.
- Fidelity pass: meaning checked against source.
The learner does not need to perform all seven visibly in the examination. Training makes the sequence faster.
The Source Map
For longer material, build a quick source map:
- Paragraph 1 → problem;
- Paragraph 2 → cause;
- Paragraph 3 → second cause;
- Paragraph 4 → consequence;
- Paragraph 5 → proposed response.
The map helps the learner see that six sentences inside one paragraph may still represent one principal point.
Topic Sentences Are Clues, Not Guaranteed Answers
A topic sentence often signals the principal point.
But writers can delay the main idea, imply it across several sentences or place a key qualification later.
Do not summarise only the first sentence of each paragraph mechanically.
Repeated Vocabulary Is a Signal
When a source repeatedly returns to the same concept using different examples, that concept may be a principal point.
Repeated terms such as cost, trust, access, fatigue, reliability, inequality or risk can reveal the source’s organising themes.
But frequency alone is not proof of importance. Read the logic.
Headings and Subheadings Are Structural Clues
If the source includes headings, they can expose its architecture.
A heading may itself become part of the summary structure, but the learner should still read what lies beneath it. A heading such as “Challenges” may contain two distinct principal challenges that both deserve inclusion.
Problem–Cause–Consequence–Response
Many informational texts follow this structure.
- problem;
- cause;
- consequence;
- response.
A strong summary can often compress each stage into one sentence.
Claim–Evidence–Qualification
Argumentative sources often follow another pattern.
- main claim;
- principal supporting evidence;
- important limitation or qualification;
- final position.
The summary need not reproduce every supporting example, but it must not remove the limitation if that limitation changes the claim.
Chronological Summaries
Historical narratives, procedures and case studies can require chronological compression.
Keep major turning points.
Remove routine transitions.
Example:
The campaign began locally, expanded nationally after the first major protest, and ended with policy negotiations after public support increased.
Three phases can replace a long event-by-event retelling.
Comparative Summaries
Some exam tasks ask learners to summarise similarities, differences or contrasting viewpoints from two sources.
Do not write Source A summary followed by Source B summary if the task asks for direct comparison.
Group by shared dimension:
- both support the policy, but for different reasons;
- A emphasises cost, B emphasises fairness;
- A predicts short-run disruption, B focuses on long-run gain.
The summary should compress the relationship between sources.
Summarise a Viewpoint
Ben identifies:
- central position;
- main reasons;
- important qualification;
- proposed response if present.
He does not add whether he agrees.
Summarise a Character’s Position
In literary or comprehension tasks, several lines of dialogue may compress into one position.
Source:
“We cannot keep spending like this.” “The bills are already too high.” “Another loan only delays the problem.”
Summary:
The speaker believes further borrowing is unsustainable because current spending and debt are already too high.
Summarise a Scientific Finding
A scientific summary should preserve:
- what was investigated;
- main result;
- important boundary;
- conclusion at the correct claim strength.
Example:
Across the observed range, higher temperature was associated with faster reaction rate up to about 40°C, after which the rate declined.
No extra mechanism is added unless the source includes it and it is principal.
Summarise an Experimental Method
A method summary keeps only the stages needed to understand what was done.
- vary temperature;
- measure reaction rate;
- control other relevant variables;
- repeat trials.
Equipment brands, exact volumes and procedural detail can often be removed unless they are central to the method’s meaning.
Summarise a Mathematical Argument
Ryan may compress a derivation into its conceptual route:
- rewrite expression in standard form;
- apply the relevant identity;
- simplify to an intermediate relation;
- use the domain condition;
- reach the target result.
A summary of a proof is not the proof itself.
Summarise a Data Set
For data, principal points usually include:
- overall direction;
- largest change;
- turning point;
- important exception;
- dominant difference between groups.
Do not copy every row.
Summarise a Graph
A graph summary is even more compressed than a graph description.
The value rises rapidly at first, then plateaus, with one unusually low point near the middle of the range.
A description might add intervals and numerical anchors. A summary keeps the structural pattern.
Summarise a Historical Event
Clara keeps:
- starting condition;
- major trigger;
- principal response;
- main outcome.
She removes routine chronology unless a turning point depends on it.
Summarise Historical Causes
If a source lists many examples under several cause families, compress by category:
- economic pressure;
- institutional weakness;
- public mobilisation;

If the source makes one cause conditional on another, preserve the interaction.
Summarise a Geography Case Study
Keep:
- location/context;
- principal process or issue;
- main impact;
- main response;
- important limitation.
Remove long lists of local details unless the task asks for them.

An economics article may contain several mechanisms and examples.
A useful summary preserves:
- policy/action;
- main transmission mechanism;
- main benefit;
- main limitation or condition.
It does not need every elasticity example or country case.
Summarise a Business Case

The summary creates a decision-ready state without deciding for the reader.
Summarise a Computer System
A system summary may preserve:

- output;
- key control/security layer.
Implementation detail can disappear if it does not affect the requested summary.
Summarise an Exam Script
A tutor may summarise a paper as:
Knowledge is mostly secure, but marks are being lost through late-paper timing, incomplete checking and several command-word mismatches.
This is more useful than recounting every wrong answer when the goal is to communicate the principal pattern.
Summarise an Error Pattern
Several errors can compress into one failure signature:
- three missed negative-word questions;
- two “EXCEPT” items reversed;
- one “least likely” item answered positively.
Summary:
The learner is repeatedly losing marks on negative-polarity question wording.
Examples become one diagnostic category.
Do Not Copy the Source
Copying is not compression.
Even if every copied sentence is relevant, the learner has not demonstrated selection.
Use source language only where technical precision or task instructions require it.
Do Not Add Your Opinion
Weak:
The writer thinks public transport needs more funding, and I agree because traffic is terrible.
Summary should stop after representing the writer’s position.
Do Not Add Facts From Memory
If the task asks for a summary of supplied material, outside knowledge can distort the answer.
The source may deliberately present a narrower or unusual case.
Summarise what is there.
Do Not Turn Summary Into Critique
A source can be inaccurate, biased or weakly argued.
Unless the task asks for evaluation, the summary still needs to represent its position fairly.
Critique comes later.

Compression can remove so much content that only empty labels remain.

The summary remains specific enough to carry meaning.

“Suggests” and “may” carried uncertainty.

Do Not Change Causal Direction

Shortening must not reverse arrows.
Do Not Merge Opposing Views Into One
If Source A supports the proposal and Source B opposes it, “both sources discuss the proposal” is technically true and intellectually useless.
Preserve the difference:
Source A supports the proposal for its economic benefits, while Source B opposes it because of environmental costs.
Do Not Confuse Concision With Vagueness
“Things got worse” is concise.
It is also weak.
“Congestion, pollution and transport reliability worsened” is still concise but preserves the content.
The One-Sentence-Per-Point Drill
After identifying principal points, allow one sentence for each.
If a point requires four sentences, the learner may still be explaining rather than summarising.
This is a training constraint, not a universal exam rule.
The Six-to-Three Drill
Give six source details.
The learner must group them into three principal points.
This teaches abstraction without losing meaning.
The Three-to-One Drill
Give three examples that support one idea.
The learner writes one sentence that captures the shared point.
The Qualification Drill
Give a source containing “most,” “some,” “only,” “unless,” “may,” “usually” and “except.”
The learner must summarise without deleting those logical limits.

Give a provocative source.
The learner must summarise it fairly even if they strongly disagree.

After writing, compare summary and source.
- Did I omit a principal point?

Some summary tasks impose a word limit.
Do not write to the maximum simply because it exists.
Use enough words to preserve the principal points accurately.
If over the limit, cut:
- repeated ideas;
- examples;
- decorative adjectives;
- background context;
- redundant transitions.
Do not cut qualifications or principal relationships first.

Compression can make references unclear.
“This caused it to worsen” may save words and lose meaning.
Repeat the key noun when necessary.
Clarity outranks tiny word savings.
The Connector Problem
Connectors can carry source logic:
- because;
- however;
- therefore;
- although;
- unless;
- while;
- after;
- before.
Remove the wrong connector and the relationship changes.
Summary is not only nouns.
It is compressed logic.

Students should learn to group several examples under one broader point and preserve simple contrasts and causes.
This is where summary stops being “shortened copying” and becomes conceptual compression.
Upper Secondary: Add Fidelity and Source Logic
Students should increasingly preserve:
- qualifications;
- claim strength;
- causal direction;
- source contrasts;
- conditions;
- important exceptions.
They should also know when technical language must remain unchanged.
JC, IB, IP and Advanced Learners: Summary Becomes Model Compression
Advanced learners may need to summarise arguments, studies, theories, models, data sets and competing sources.
They should preserve the information architecture:
- claim;
- evidence type;
- mechanism where principal;
- qualification;
- boundary;
- conclusion.
A high-level summary is compact because the learner understands the structure deeply enough to compress it safely.
Parents: Ask “Which Details Could Disappear?”
A useful home prompt is:
If you had to cut this answer in half, which details could disappear without changing the meaning?
Then:
Which ideas absolutely must stay?
Those two questions teach compression and fidelity together.

The summary is short because she understood the source well enough to know what could safely disappear.
Deep Layer: Summary Is Controlled Information Loss
Every summary loses information.
That is not a defect. It is the point.
The intellectual challenge is deciding what may be lost without changing the meaning that matters.
Imagine the source as a high-resolution image. A summary reduces the resolution. If done well, the main shapes remain recognisable even though tiny textures disappear. If done badly, the reduction removes an edge, merges two separate objects or changes the direction of a line.
That gives summary two simultaneous goals:
- compression: remove non-essential information;
- fidelity: preserve the source’s principal meaning and relationships.
Students often optimise only one.
They either preserve everything and fail to compress, or compress aggressively and distort the source.
Mastery balances both.

The nouns survive.
The causal architecture disappears.
A strong summary keeps the relationship:
Flooding became more frequent because rainfall rose without matching drainage expansion.
The Information-Hierarchy Model
Source material often contains several levels of information.
- Level 1: central thesis or purpose.
- Level 2: principal supporting points.
- Level 3: mechanisms, evidence or subpoints.
- Level 4: examples, quotations, statistics and illustrations.
- Level 5: stylistic decoration and repetition.
Most summaries retain Levels 1–2 and selected parts of Level 3.
Levels 4–5 are usually the first to disappear.
But this is not a fixed rule.
If a statistic is the main finding, it may become Level 1 information. If a quotation defines a speaker’s position, it may need to survive. If a numerical threshold is the central scientific result, removing it would distort the study.
Importance is task-dependent.
The Salience Test
Information is salient when it changes the reader’s model of the source.
Ask:
- If I remove this, does the main conclusion change?
- Does it create a new cause, contrast or condition?
- Does it define the scale or boundary of a claim?
- Does it reverse or qualify another point?
- Does the question explicitly target it?
If no, it may be safely compressible.
The Abstraction-Level Problem
Summaries often fail because points are compressed at inconsistent levels.
Imagine a business source containing:
- higher rent;
- higher wages;
- more expensive electricity;
- weaker cash flow.
A clean summary might say:
Rising operating costs are weakening cash flow.
That raises the first three items to a shared category and preserves their consequence.
But “higher rent, costs and financial problems” mixes an example, a category and a consequence without clear structure.
Summarise at the Question’s Resolution
The same source can support summaries at different resolutions.
Question A:
Summarise the causes of the company’s cash-flow problem.
Focus on causes.
Question B:
Summarise the company’s overall financial position.
Now causes, outcome and possibly debt/cash reserves may matter.
Summary is not only source-dependent.
It is task-dependent.
Source Scope and Task Scope Are Different
A passage may discuss ten ideas.
The question may ask for only three of them.
Example:
Summarise the environmental effects described in the passage.
The source’s economic and social points are irrelevant even if they are principal to the whole article.
First filter by task.
Then filter by importance.
The Two-Stage Filter
- Relevance filter: does this information answer the requested aspect?
- Importance filter: is it principal within that aspect?
Students who skip the first filter write irrelevant but accurate summaries.
Students who skip the second filter copy too much detail.
The Theme-Cluster Method
For long sources, label details with quick theme tags.
- C = cost;
- A = access;
- R = reliability;
- S = safety;
- E = environment.
When five separate sentences receive the same tag, they may be examples of one principal point.
This method is useful in case studies, comprehension passages and source packs.
The Redundancy Map
Redundancy is information that repeats a function already served.
Suppose a source contains:
- a statistic showing rising travel time;
- a commuter quote about long journeys;
- an anecdote about arriving late;
- a graph showing congestion growth.
All four may support the same principal point: commuting conditions are worsening.
A summary usually needs the point once.
Evidence Can Be Removed While the Claim Remains
This is one of the central summary moves.
Original:
Three surveys, two interviews and one observational study all found that students struggled to maintain concentration after extended late-night device use.
Summary:
Several sources linked extended late-night device use with weaker concentration.
The evidence count compresses.
The evidential status remains.
Do Not Upgrade Weak Evidence During Compression
Original:
Several interviewees believed the policy had reduced crime.
Wrong summary:
The policy reduced crime.
The summary converted belief into fact.
Better:
Some interviewees believed the policy had reduced crime.
Evidence type is part of meaning.
Attribution Matters
Who says something can matter as much as what is said.
“The government says the programme succeeded” is not the same as “the programme succeeded.”
“Researchers found…” is not the same as “participants believed…”
When attribution affects evidential meaning, preserve it.
Summarising Uncertainty
Uncertainty often appears in modal language:
- may;
- might;
- could;
- suggests;
- appears;
- likely;
- possibly;
- consistent with.
These words are not padding.
They specify claim strength.
Compressing them away can turn a tentative interpretation into a fact claim.
Summarising Numerical Evidence
Numbers should survive when they define the principal point.
Keep numbers when they establish:
- scale;
- threshold;
- ranking;
- turning point;
- large disparity;
- magnitude central to the conclusion.
Remove numbers when they merely repeat an already clear pattern.
Worked Numerical Compression
Source:
Revenue rose from $4.1 million to $4.4 million, then $4.9 million and finally $5.6 million, while operating costs rose from $3.4 million to $3.8 million, $4.5 million and $5.4 million.
Summary:
Revenue grew across the period, but costs rose faster and nearly caught up with revenue by the final year.
If the exact margin is the task focus, retain the numbers.
Summarising a Table
Do not narrate row by row.
Identify:
- dominant pattern;
- largest difference;
- important exception;
- meaningful group relationship.
Then compress to two or three statements.
Summarising a Diagram
A diagram summary should preserve the main structure or flow.
For a system:
Inputs enter the processing stage, outputs are stored or delivered, and feedback is used to adjust later processing.
Individual labels can disappear if they are not principal.
Summarising a Multi-Source Pack
When several sources are provided, summary becomes a grouping problem across documents.
Do not summarise each source independently unless the task asks for separate summaries.
Instead, map:
- shared points;
- unique points;
- contradictions;
- different evidence types;
- different conditions.
Then write the principal cross-source picture.
Cross-Source Agreement
Source A, B and C may all support one point through different evidence.
Summary:
All three sources indicate that transport reliability has worsened, although they use different measures and perspectives.
The agreement is principal.
Cross-Source Disagreement
Summary should preserve genuine disagreement.
Source A attributes the decline mainly to higher costs, whereas Source B emphasises weaker demand.
Do not blur the sources into “there are several causes” if the disagreement itself is central.
Source Weight Is Usually Not a Summary Job
If one source is clearly more reliable, that may matter later in evaluation.
But a summary should not silently downgrade the weaker source unless the task explicitly asks for a weighted synthesis.
Represent first.
Judge later.
Summarising a Research Study
A concise study summary can preserve:
- research question;
- sample/context;
- method at high level;
- main finding;
- important limitation;
- conclusion strength.
Example:
A study of secondary students compared two revision methods and found higher delayed recall after retrieval practice, although the sample came from one school and does not establish universal effects.
The method is compressed, the finding retained, the limitation preserved.
Summarising a Theory
A theory summary should preserve:
- what the theory explains;
- core mechanism or components;
- major prediction;
- scope/boundary if central.
Do not turn the summary into a review of strengths and weaknesses unless asked.
Summarising a Mathematical Proof
A proof summary can state its route without reproducing every algebraic step.
For example:
The proof rewrites the expression using the identity, applies the domain condition, and reduces both sides to the same form.
The summary is useful for revision.
The examination proof still requires the actual valid steps where demanded.
Summarising an Essay
An essay summary can preserve:
- thesis;
- main supporting arguments;
- strongest counterargument;
- final position.
The summary should not simply list paragraph topics if the relationship among them matters.
Summarising Narrative Without Retelling Plot
Literary summary often becomes plot retelling.
To compress, identify:
- initial situation;
- central conflict;
- major turning point;
- resolution;
- character change if central.
Minor scenes disappear.
Summarising a Policy
A policy summary should preserve:

The summary identifies the performance system rather than listing every error.

Long solution route:

Summary:
