Good Composition Tuition | Baseline → Writing Conference → Fresh Retest → School Return

A good composition tuition programme should be able to show what the student could do before teaching, what changed during instruction, whether the change survives a fresh prompt, and whether it eventually appears back in school writing.

This page focuses on one quality sequence: Baseline → Writing Conference → Fresh Retest → School Return.

1. Baseline: Start With Independent Writing

Before heavy coaching, ask the learner to produce enough independent writing for the tutor to observe. A marked school composition is useful, but a fresh sample shows what the student currently does without remembered corrections.

Baseline observationPossible teaching question
cannot begintask interpretation or idea generation?
strong ideas, weak paragraph orderstructure?
clear oral story, weak written formsentence representation?
good first draft, poor revisionself-monitoring?
quality collapses under timeexecution stability?

2. Writing Conference: Talk About Decisions

A writing conference should not become a tutor reading out corrections while the student listens. Ask the learner why a paragraph exists, what the turning point is, which sentence carries the consequence, and what they would change first.

The conference helps the tutor distinguish what the student knows from what the page merely shows.

3. Give One or Two High-Value Repairs

Too much feedback creates a page of corrections but little memory. Prioritise the highest-value active weakness. A recurring paragraph-control problem deserves more attention than one unusual spelling error.

  • repair the task interpretation;
  • repair one structural weakness;
  • repair one repeated language pattern;
  • create a personal checking action;
  • leave lower-value issues for later.

4. Fresh Retest: Change the Prompt

After the correction, do not judge progress from the same composition. Use a new theme, picture or situation. The student should apply the repaired principle without being told exactly where to use it.

5. School Return: Does the Skill Travel?

Tuition writing exists to improve the learner’s actual writing life. School compositions, class assignments and teacher comments provide valuable return evidence.

  • Does a repeated teacher comment disappear?
  • Does the student plan before being prompted?
  • Do paragraphs stay more focused?
  • Are recurring grammar errors reducing?
  • Does the child revise independently?

What a Good Programme Should Not Depend On

  • permanent model-essay copying;
  • memorised “beautiful phrases” regardless of context;
  • one fixed story structure for every prompt;
  • marks without process diagnosis;
  • claims that every child should progress at the same speed.

Small Groups Should Preserve Individual Baselines

Three students can share a prompt and still receive different repairs. The tutor should know which learner struggles with ideas, which with structure and which with language control. Group discussion should sharpen judgement without erasing those individual states.

Progress Reporting Should Describe Capability

“Improving” is too vague. Better reporting might say: plans independently on familiar prompts; paragraph unity is stronger; tense remains unstable under time; self-correction appears after drafting. These descriptions tell parents what has changed and what is still active.

Current Primary English Direction

MOE’s English Language Syllabus 2020 emphasises purposeful writing, audience, context and increasingly independent language use. A good composition programme should therefore move the learner toward stronger decisions and less scaffolding over time.

Families can review the MOE English Language Syllabus 2020.

The Goal Is a Visible Learning Loop

Baseline. Writing conference. Focused repair. Fresh retest. School return. A good composition programme should make that loop visible enough that the child, parent and tutor can tell whether the writing system is genuinely becoming more independent.
