The repair is not to force insertion. Practise one or two target words inside shorter sentences or paragraphs, then return to whole writing. The aim is automatic access, not decoration.
10. The oral retrieval sprint
Choose a familiar topic and give the learner sixty seconds to explain it. After the first attempt, identify vague general-purpose words such as good, bad, thing or nice. Ask whether one or two more precise words would improve the explanation. Then repeat with a different topic.
This tests retrieval speed rather than only vocabulary knowledge. A student may possess the word but need repeated speaking practice before it becomes available quickly enough for oral communication.
11. The spelling-and-form separation
When a learner spells a target word incorrectly, separate the spelling problem from the meaning problem. Ask for an oral explanation first. If meaning is secure, repair form specifically. Look for syllables, roots, prefixes, suffixes and recurring spelling patterns.
This prevents a spelling error from being mistaken for complete vocabulary failure. The reverse is also important: perfect spelling does not prove deep word knowledge.
12. The misuse diagnosis
Take an authentic sentence in which the learner used a word inaccurately. Ask which layer failed. Was the meaning wrong? Was the word too strong? Was the grammatical form incorrect? Did the surrounding phrase sound unnatural? Was the register unsuitable?
This turns correction into diagnosis. The learner begins to understand why a choice failed instead of simply replacing one word with the teacher’s preferred answer.
13. The background-knowledge bridge
Choose a new topic and ask what the learner already knows before introducing vocabulary. If the topic is earthquakes, first discuss plates, movement, buildings and safety. New words such as seismic, epicentre or evacuate then attach to a conceptual structure.
If the learner cannot explain the concept even in simple language, teach the idea before demanding precise terminology. Sometimes what looks like a vocabulary gap is actually a knowledge gap.
14. The active-versus-recognition triage
Take twenty words from a list and classify them into three groups: already active, recognition only, and unfamiliar. Do not spend equal time on all twenty. Stable active words can be left alone. Recognition-only words may need retrieval if they are useful for writing or speaking. Unfamiliar high-value words deserve deeper acquisition work.
This triage prevents vocabulary study from becoming a ritual in which every word receives the same worksheet regardless of learner state.
15. The fresh-text test
After studying vocabulary through one passage, find a different passage containing some of the same words or ideas. Do not announce which words are being tested. See whether the learner notices and understands them naturally.
This is stronger evidence than repeating the original exercise because the original layout, sentence order and topic cues have been removed.

A longer cycle can combine these drills without overwhelming the learner. The first week should focus on selecting and understanding a small number of high-value words. The important feature is movement. A word should not stay permanently in “definition study.” It should either progress toward flexible use or reveal the layer that needs repair.

A small group can make vocabulary differences visible. Three students may all answer a definition question correctly, yet one may retrieve the word slowly, one may misuse it in a sentence, and one may transfer it immediately to a new context. The group creates comparison without requiring the students to have identical learning needs.
A useful tutor sequence is: independent attempt first, comparison second, explanation third, then individual retest. The independent attempt reveals the learner’s own state. Comparison exposes alternatives. Explanation repairs understanding. The individual retest checks whether the learning survived after peer support disappeared.
This is also why vocabulary teaching should not be judged by how many words a class “covered.” The important evidence is what each learner can later retrieve and use independently.
Exit Criteria: When Can a Word Leave Deliberate Practice?
A word can leave frequent deliberate practice when its important job is stable. For a recognition word, repeated understanding in fresh reading may be enough. For an active word, the learner should be able to retrieve and use it naturally after a delay and in more than one context.
Retiring a word does not mean forgetting it. It means allowing ordinary reading, writing and speaking to maintain it while deliberate study time moves to weaker language. This keeps the vocabulary system efficient.
The Final Principle: Test the Layer You Actually Care About
If the goal is reading comprehension, test meaning in fresh text. If the goal is composition, test retrieval and natural use under writing load. If the goal is oral communication, test speed and appropriateness in speech. If the goal is long-term retention, test after a delay. A vocabulary activity is only useful when its demands resemble the capability you want the learner to build.
That alignment is the difference between doing vocabulary work and acquiring vocabulary. The page can be full, the list can be complete and the quiz can be perfect, yet the real question remains: can the learner find the word when the world changes?
