A student who can state a scientific claim but cannot say what evidence would change it may be memorising rather than reasoning. Primary 5 is a good stage for tutors to ask one difficult but powerful question: “What evidence would make you change your mind?”

Start with the claim
Ask the student to state what they believe the evidence shows.
- “Increasing ___ causes ___.”
- “Object A is better suited because ___.”
- “The plant grew more because ___.”
- “The graph shows that ___.”
The claim should be specific enough that it could be tested.
Then ask for supporting evidence
- Which value?
- Which comparison?
- Which observation?
- Which part of the setup?
- Which repeated pattern?
This prevents a student from treating a familiar topic statement as proof.
Now ask the key question: what evidence would change your mind?
The answer reveals whether the child understands that scientific claims are proportional to evidence.
- a result in the opposite direction;
- a repeated measurement that does not match the first;
- a control showing another factor caused the effect;
- a counterexample that breaks the rule;
- a larger data set showing the apparent pattern was weak.
If the student says “nothing could change my answer”, the claim may have become dogma rather than a scientific conclusion.
Teach certainty levels
- Supported: the evidence directly backs the claim.
- Probable: evidence points in one direction but is limited.
- Possible: plausible, but evidence is incomplete.
- Unsupported: the claim goes beyond what the data shows.
This language helps students avoid overclaiming.
Use conflicting evidence deliberately
Give a result that does not fit the student’s initial conclusion.
- Does the child ignore it?
- Does the learner invent an explanation immediately?
- Does the student revise the claim?
- Does the child ask whether the measurement is reliable?
The response shows how flexibly the learner handles evidence.
A tutor should challenge without turning every answer into debate
The point is not to make students doubt established Science unnecessarily. The point is to teach that classroom conclusions should match the strength of the evidence available in the question or investigation.
Known scientific principles still have stronger authority than one weak classroom measurement. Context matters.
Claim → Evidence → Counterevidence → Revised claim
- State the claim.
- Identify the supporting evidence.
- Introduce a counterexample or changed condition.
- Decide whether the claim survives, narrows or fails.
- Rewrite at the right confidence level.
This is a compact way to teach scientific revision rather than answer defence.
Why this matters in Primary 5
Primary 5 students increasingly encounter graphs, tables, investigations, systems and explanations where the answer depends on interpreting evidence rather than recalling one fact.
MOE’s 2023 Primary Science syllabus emphasises inquiry, evidence and evaluation, making claim strength an important upper-primary habit.
