Primary 3 Science should not force children to choose between understanding and scientific vocabulary. A good tutor first checks whether the child can explain the idea in ordinary language, then helps the learner replace vague words with precise scientific terms without losing the meaning underneath.

Start with what the child means

A student may say:

  • “This one is harder.”
  • “The water went away.”
  • “The plant is weak.”
  • “The object sticks.”

Those phrases are not always wrong. They are starting points. The tutor should ask what the child actually observed or intended before supplying the formal term.

Then sharpen the meaning

  • “Harder” in what way: difficult to bend, scratch or compress?
  • “Went away” by what process?
  • “Weak” based on which visible sign?
  • “Sticks” because of attraction, adhesion or another cause?

Scientific vocabulary becomes useful when the underlying distinction is already understood.

Attach the scientific term after the relationship is clear

The learning sequence is:

Everyday description → precise observation → scientific term → new example

For example, the child may first say “the water became less”. The tutor can clarify what was observed, then introduce the correct process only if the context supports it.

Do not reward keyword dumping

A student can insert several scientific words into a sentence while connecting them incorrectly. Ask the child to explain the relationship in plain language after using the term.

If the learner cannot do that, the vocabulary may be decorative rather than understood.

Use contrast to deepen word meaning

  • rough vs smooth;
  • transparent vs opaque;
  • living vs non-living criteria;
  • attract vs repel;
  • melt vs dissolve;
  • observe vs infer.

Words become more stable when students understand the boundary between nearby concepts.

Recognition is not enough

Ask the student to use the term without a word bank.

  • define in own words;
  • identify in an example;
  • produce a fresh example;
  • use in a scientific sentence;
  • distinguish from a related term.

This turns passive vocabulary into productive language.

P3 Science language should stay tied to evidence

Scientific vocabulary is not a separate spelling list. It should appear while students observe, compare, classify, describe and explain.

MOE’s 2023 Primary Science syllabus develops both scientific ideas and communication practices from P3 onward.

What a 3-pax P3 class can do
