A good Primary 3 Science tutor should not spend the first lesson proving how much the tutor knows. The first job is to find out how the child sees, describes, reads and explains Science. Ten careful minutes can reveal more than a large generic worksheet if the tutor knows what to look for.

Minute 1–2: Ask the child to observe, not recall
Show a simple object, photograph, specimen or diagram and ask: “What do you notice?” Do not begin with “What is this called?”
- Does the child describe visible properties?
- Does the learner immediately jump to a guess?
- Are comparisons precise?
- Does the student distinguish what is seen from what is inferred?
This reveals whether Science begins from evidence or from memorised labels.
Minute 3–4: Check vocabulary depth
Ask the child to explain one familiar Science word in ordinary language, then use it in a new example.
- Can the student define it without repeating a textbook sentence?
- Can the word be applied to a different object?
- Does the child confuse everyday and scientific meanings?
- Can the learner recognise the word but not produce it?
Vocabulary knowledge is stronger when meaning can move across contexts.
Minute 5–6: Read one short question together
Choose a short age-appropriate question. Before answering, ask:
- What object or system is this about?
- What changed?
- What evidence is given?
- What is the question asking you to do?
A child can know the topic but still fail because the task was misread. That is a different repair from missing Science knowledge.
Minute 7–8: Ask for an oral explanation
Let the student explain the answer aloud before writing.
- Is the scientific relationship complete?
- Does the child jump from cause to result without mechanism?
- Are terms accurate?
- Does the explanation depend on tutor prompting?
If the oral explanation is strong but writing is weak, the problem may be expression. If the oral explanation is already wrong, the tutor should repair the concept first.
Minute 9–10: Give one changed question
Change the surface while preserving the same learning job. The child now has to recognise the relationship without copying the previous answer.
This is the earliest transfer check. It tells the tutor whether the student learned the process or only followed the first example.
What the tutor should record
- Observation: precise or assumption-heavy?
- Vocabulary: recognition, meaning, retrieval and use.
- Question reading: task, evidence and condition control.
- Explanation: concept, mechanism and language.
- Prompt level: how much help was needed?
- Transfer: did the changed question succeed?
This creates a teaching starting point rather than a personality label such as “weak in Science”.
Do not diagnose from marks alone
Two P3 students can receive the same score for different reasons. One may misunderstand vocabulary. Another may understand orally but write poorly. A third may rush and skip evidence. The first ten minutes should discriminate among those possibilities.
Do not turn the first lesson into an exam
Primary 3 is the first formal Science year. The diagnostic should reveal thinking without creating unnecessary pressure. A short, conversational sequence often gives better information than a long placement test completed under anxiety.

MOE’s 2023 Primary Science syllabus develops observation, communication, evidence, inquiry and explanation from P3 onward. A useful first diagnostic therefore checks more than facts: it checks whether the child can receive and use scientific information.
