A child may answer familiar number facts quickly while remaining uncertain about what the operation means. Another may understand the relationship but still calculate slowly. These students need different support.

Fluency Matters, but It Is Not the Whole Job
Automatic number facts reduce working-memory load. The child does not need to reconstruct every small calculation from the beginning. That matters as problems become longer.
But fast recall is useful only when the child also understands the quantity relationship.
Ask the Child to Show the Meaning
- Can the child explain what each number refers to?
- Can the child draw or model the situation?
- Can the child explain why addition, subtraction, multiplication or division is appropriate?
- Can the child estimate whether the answer is sensible?
If the child can only reproduce a memorised procedure, the learning may be brittle.
Word Problems Are a Good Stress Test
Word problems reveal whether language can be converted into a mathematical relationship. A student may know all four operations yet choose the wrong one because the relationship between quantities was not understood.
