A stronger extension can come from asking deeper questions about the same text: not only what happened, but how we know, what changed, which interpretation is better supported and how the language creates meaning.

More Work and Deeper Work Are Different
A student can complete ten similar questions without learning much beyond the first few. Depth changes the cognitive job rather than simply increasing volume.

Depth 1: Explain the Evidence
After a correct answer, ask how the student knows. This changes success from answer recognition into evidence-backed reasoning.
The learner should be able to identify the clue, explain the relationship and show why another plausible answer is weaker.
Depth 2: Compare Two Interpretations
Some texts allow more than one possible interpretation, but not all interpretations are equally well supported. Students can compare two readings and decide which requires fewer unsupported assumptions.
This builds disciplined inference rather than encouraging free-form opinion.
Depth 3: Track How the Writer Creates Meaning
Students can look beyond content and notice language choices. Why did the writer repeat this phrase? Why does the paragraph begin with a contrast? What changes when one verb is replaced by another?
This does not require premature Secondary English analysis. It simply makes language choices visible at an appropriate Primary level.
Depth 4: Transfer the Idea Into Writing
Reading becomes richer when students can use what they notice. A strong paragraph transition can become a writing lesson. A precise verb can become a vocabulary lesson. A well-supported inference can become a model for explaining evidence.
Depth 5: Change a Condition
Ask what would happen if one part changed. If a character knew the information earlier, would the decision still make sense? If the audience changed, would the writing tone change? If the evidence were removed, would the inference still be defensible?
Changed-condition questions reveal whether the learner understands the relationship rather than remembers the original answer.
Extension Should Preserve Breadth
A strong reader does not need to spend every lesson analysing passages more deeply. Primary English remains broad: speaking, listening, vocabulary, grammar, reading and writing all matter. Extension should deepen selected work without narrowing the subject into one advanced skill.
