Explain: Make the Relationship Visible
An explanation should connect evidence to an outcome. Students often know both facts but leave the causal or logical bridge unstated.
Instead of “He was worried. He kept checking his phone,” an explanation might make the relationship explicit: “His repeated checking suggests that he was waiting anxiously for important news.”
Compare: Keep Both Sides in the Same Frame
A comparison should use one relevant dimension. If the question asks how two characters react differently, writing a full description of character A and a short note on character B produces imbalance.

Justify: Evidence Must Do Work

Evaluation is easier when students know what “good” means in the current task. Is an argument convincing because its evidence is relevant and sufficient? Is a sentence effective because it creates the intended tone? Is an explanation strong because it accounts for all the evidence?
Without a criterion, evaluation collapses into preference.
Primary English Already Builds the Foundation
Primary students already retrieve information, infer, compare, explain and justify in age-appropriate forms. The Secondary transition does not introduce reasoning from nothing. It increases the depth, length and independence expected.
A P5 learner may justify an inference with one or two clues. A Secondary learner may need to compare interpretations, examine several pieces of evidence and sustain the judgement across a paragraph.
Do Not Teach Command Words as Fixed Templates
Sentence frames can help initially, but students should understand the underlying job. “Explain” does not always require exactly two sentences. “Compare” does not always require the word whereas. The response form should fit the meaning.
Use One Text With Four Commands
A useful progression keeps the passage constant and changes only the command. This makes the increasing response depth visible.
- Explain why the character changes her mind.
- Compare her response before and after the new information.
- Justify whether the change is believable.
- Evaluate which piece of evidence most strongly supports the change.
Command Words Matter in Writing Too
Situational writing and longer responses also contain implicit commands. A request needs the reader to know what action is wanted. An explanation needs sufficient context. An argumentative response needs reasons and evidence. Students should identify the communication job before choosing the language.
