A worked example is useful only if the tutor knows how to remove it. Students can follow a model perfectly and still be unable to begin when the example disappears.
This legacy Bishan Primary Maths page now owns one job: Worked Example → Faded Example → Independent Problem. It does not claim a current eduKate branch in Bishan; families should verify actual teaching location, timing and availability directly.
Stage 1: Worked Example
The tutor models the relationship and makes the decision points explicit: what the quantities mean, why this representation fits and why the operation follows.
Stage 2: Faded Example
- remove one step;
- hide the chosen operation;
- leave the diagram incomplete;
- change one number or condition;
- ask the student to explain the missing decision.
The student begins doing more of the cognitive work while the structure is still visible.
Stage 3: Independent Problem
Change the surface and remove the worked model. The learner must identify the relationship, choose a representation and solve without being told which method to use.
| Performance | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| Copies model only | Procedure recognition, weak transfer |
| Completes faded example | Partial independence |
| Solves changed problem | Stronger transfer |
| Selects efficient method | Growing mathematical judgement |
Do Not Fade Before Understanding
If the child cannot explain what the model means, removing support simply creates confusion. Fading follows sufficient conceptual clarity.
Three Students Can Fade at Different Rates
One learner may still need the full bar model, another an incomplete model, another only the word problem. The shared mathematical idea stays common while support changes quietly.
For Bishan Families
Confirm current eduKate class logistics directly. A useful Primary Math programme should show that worked examples are temporary scaffolds on the way to independent problem solving.
