Primary English should not be taught as one six-year worksheet sequence. The learning job changes as children move through primary school: early foundations, middle-primary connection, then upper-primary transfer and independence.
This legacy Katong Primary English page now owns one job: P1–P2 Build → P3–P4 Connect → P5–P6 Transfer. It does not imply a current eduKate branch in Katong; families should verify actual teaching location, timing and availability directly.
P1–P2: Build
- understand short instructions;
- read words and sentences accurately;
- grow oral vocabulary;
- say complete ideas;
- move spoken meaning into writing;
- begin familiar tasks with less adult prompting.
The goal is a stable language foundation, not premature PSLE drilling.
P3–P4: Connect
- keep meaning across longer texts;
- connect clues and make bounded inferences;
- use grammar and vocabulary inside paragraphs;
- organise writing so each paragraph has a job;
- explain how an answer was reached.
The challenge is no longer only whether a child knows a skill, but whether several skills can work together.
P5–P6: Transfer
- retrieve language without visible notes;
- select the right process without topic labels;
- transfer grammar into writing;
- apply evidence discipline in fresh passages;
- reduce tutor prompts;
- add realistic timing after the process is stable.
MOE’s English Language Syllabus 2020 (Primary) emphasises integrated listening, speaking, reading, viewing, writing and representing with increasingly independent language use. Parents can review the public syllabus at MOE.
Three Students Can Be at Different Stages Within One Level
A P4 student may still need reading-foundation repair while another is ready for higher-level inference. eduKate’s three-student format lets the tutor share a text while varying the response depth and prompt level.
For Katong Families
Confirm current eduKate teaching location and timetable directly. The useful question is not only “What level is my child?” but “Which developmental English job is still unfinished?”
