Primary English is one subject across six years, but it is not one learning problem. P1 may be about classroom language, reading foundations and sentence formation. P6 may be about evidence, integration, time and independent execution.
This legacy Singapore Primary English page now owns one job: the developmental job changes from P1 to P6.
| Level | Core tuition job |
|---|---|
| P1 | Listen, read, say, write; build task independence |
| P2 | Build accurate automaticity without losing meaning |
| P3 | Keep the thread across longer texts and connected writing |
| P4 | Coordinate skills under larger reading/writing load |
| P5 | Build transfer and reduce scaffolding before P6 |
| P6 | Integrate, prioritise and execute independently for PSLE |
Do Not Teach P1 Like Mini-PSLE
Early-primary English needs strong foundations and positive participation. Premature exam drilling can consume time that should be building reading, vocabulary, oral language and sentence control.
Do Not Teach P6 Like P3 With More Worksheets
By P6, students need to select processes independently, transfer learning across components, manage time and recover from difficult items. Final-year tutoring should increasingly calibrate and fade support.
MOE’s English Language Syllabus 2020 (Primary) emphasises connected listening, speaking, reading, viewing, writing and representing with increasingly independent language use. Parents can review the syllabus at MOE.
What Parents Can Ask
- What is the developmental job at my child’s current level?
- Is the programme building foundations, transfer or exam execution?
- How is support changing as the learner grows?
- Can the child use the learning outside the tuition worksheet?
A useful Primary English programme changes because the learner changes.
