Primary tuition becomes counterproductive when the schedule removes the independent practice, reading, sleep and recovery that tuition itself needs in order to work. More classes can increase exposure, but they also consume the time in which a child consolidates what was taught.
This legacy page has one job: help Punggol parents decide how much tuition is too much for a Primary-school child across English, Mathematics and Science.

Tuition has a hidden homework cost
A 1.5-hour lesson is not only 1.5 hours. The full cost may include travel, preparation, homework, corrections and switching attention away from another subject. Families should count the whole load.
- lesson time;
- travel/waiting;
- assigned practice;
- school homework still to be completed;
- reading and revision displaced by the class;
- sleep or recovery lost.
A class that looks efficient in isolation can be inefficient inside the whole week.
The first question: what problem is each class solving?
Every recurring tuition slot should have a reason.
- English: persistent comprehension, writing, grammar, vocabulary or oral/listening need.
- Mathematics: prerequisite gap, representation problem, method selection or exam control.
- Science: concept, explanation, inquiry or retention gap.
If the answer is only “this subject is important”, the class may not be solving a specific constraint.
The operating-envelope test
A healthy weekly plan should preserve:
- adequate sleep;
- school attendance and concentration;
- time for homework;
- independent retrieval after tuition;
- reading, especially for English;
- CCA, family and ordinary childhood activity;
- some unscheduled recovery time.
If tuition repeatedly forces these below a healthy floor, the schedule needs redesign.
Primary 1–2: more instruction is rarely the only answer
Young children need strong literacy and numeracy foundations, but they also need time to read, speak, play, sleep and practise basic routines. A heavily scheduled child can receive many explanations while having too little time to automate them.
Tuition may be justified for a persistent foundation gap. It should not automatically become a multi-subject weekly package from Primary 1.
Primary 3–4: watch the multiplication of subjects
Science becomes a formal subject, English texts get denser and Mathematics becomes more multi-step. This is often when tuition schedules expand.
Before adding a third subject, ask whether:
- the child has a real independent gap in that subject;
- the weakness is actually caused by reading or study routines shared with another subject;
- school support has been used;
- the new class leaves enough time for follow-up practice.
Primary 5: protect the runway to P6 without turning every day into PSLE
Primary 5 is a useful year to repair compounding gaps. It is also a year when families can overreact to the approaching PSLE.
- repair weak foundations early;
- maintain strong subjects efficiently;
- continue reading and knowledge building;
- introduce timed work gradually;
- avoid filling every weekend with full papers.
Primary 6: tuition should become more selective, not automatically more numerous
Closer to PSLE, live tuition time is most valuable for high-information work: diagnosis, writing feedback, difficult Mathematics reasoning, Science explanations, oral interaction and exam calibration.
Routine repetition can often be completed independently. A student who attends many classes but has no time to correct papers is not necessarily receiving more effective preparation.
Signs tuition load is too high
- homework is routinely unfinished;
- the child is consistently sleep-deprived;
- school attention is worsening;
- tuition homework is copied or rushed;
- reading disappears;
- the student needs Sunday to finish the previous week rather than recover;
- the same errors continue despite more classes;
- the child has no independent study time.
Signs tuition load may be too low
- a persistent learning gap has no structured repair;
- school corrections are repeatedly not understood;
- the child cannot follow the current pace;
- important examination skills are never practised;
- parents are providing heavy ad hoc help every night because the child lacks a reliable learning loop.
The goal is not minimum tuition. It is the minimum effective support for the actual problem.
Use marginal value, not equality
Three subjects do not need three equal tuition allocations. If Mathematics is the true compounding risk and English is stable, Mathematics may deserve live support while English stays on reading, school work and periodic checking.
Fairness is not identical hours. It is appropriate support.
The “can this be done independently?” test
Before paying with another weekly hour, ask whether the task genuinely needs a tutor.
- reading a book: usually independent;
- routine Math fluency after teaching: often independent;
- Science retrieval cards: often independent;
- diagnosing an unknown error: may need tutor feedback;
- composition feedback: benefits from skilled review;
- oral interaction: benefits from a live partner;
- complex problem-solving failure: often benefits from observation.
Protect live teaching for jobs that require live teaching.
What a 3-pax class changes
eduKatePunggol’s current model is up to three students, typically for 1.5 hours. A small group should reduce the number of extra hours needed by making feedback more precise, not create an argument for adding more subjects automatically.
- diagnose efficiently;
- teach the high-leverage skill;
- test independence inside class;
- assign targeted rather than indiscriminate homework;
- remove support when the problem stabilises.
The monthly tuition audit
- What problem is each class solving?
- What evidence shows progress?
- What work still needs a tutor?
- What can move to independent practice?
- Is any subject stable enough to reduce?
- Is the weekly operating envelope still healthy?
Tuition should be allowed to shrink. A permanent schedule is not proof of success.
Current examination context
For 2026 PSLE candidates, SEAB lists English Language 0001, Mathematics 0008 and Science 0009. These assessments require different forms of preparation; workload should follow the student’s actual profile rather than a generic “three core subjects = three tuition classes” rule.

When more tuition may be appropriate
- a serious foundation gap needs structured live repair;
- the child is approaching an examination with a specific unresolved risk;
- the current class demonstrably reduces a persistent error;
- school support and independent work are insufficient for the problem.
When less tuition may be better
- the subject is stable;
- the student corrects independently;
- the additional class displaces sleep or reading;
- the child has no time to practise what tuition teaches;
- the main problem is timetable overload rather than knowledge.
No responsible tuition provider can guarantee a grade from adding hours. The useful target is a learning system that produces stronger independent performance with a sustainable amount of support.

- school and tuition work are completed rather than accumulated;
- sleep and reading remain protected;
- students become more independent;
- stable subjects can move to lower support;
- the timetable becomes simpler as learning improves.
