Before teaching vocabulary, grammar or comprehension strategy, check whether the learner understood what the task asked.
At P1, this may involve classroom language such as circle, match, underline, complete or choose. At upper Primary, the distinction may be between state, explain, infer, compare, support with evidence, summarise or write for a specified audience.
Task Diagnostic Questions
- Can the student restate the instruction in their own words?
- What exactly must the final response contain?
- Is one answer required or several?
- Does the command require evidence, explanation or simple identification?
- Is there an audience or purpose condition?
If the child cannot explain the job, additional content teaching may solve the wrong problem.
Layer 2: Language — Does the Student Understand the Material?
If the task is understood, inspect the language itself. The student may be blocked by vocabulary, syntax, reference or paragraph cohesion.
- Does the learner know the key word in context?
- Can the sentence be paraphrased accurately?
- Can pronouns be traced back to their referents?
- Does the student recognise cause, contrast, condition or sequence?
- Can the learner explain what the paragraph is doing?
If the language is misunderstood, exam technique is not yet the first repair. Meaning must become stable enough for strategy to operate on it.
Layer 3: Strategy — Can the Student Choose a Useful Process?
A student can understand the task and the passage yet still fail because the correct process is not available or not selected.
- For comprehension: locate evidence, infer, compare, eliminate irrelevant detail.
- For writing: interpret prompt, choose direction, plan paragraph jobs, draft, revise.
- For grammar: identify the relationship before applying the rule.
- For vocabulary: infer from context, word parts and semantic contrast.
- For oral: state a view, give a reason, support it and respond to follow-up.
Strategy teaching is useful when the learner has enough language to use the process. Otherwise the method becomes a ritual performed on misunderstood material.
Layer 4: Independence — Does the Process Belong to the Student?
The final observation asks how much support is needed. A correct answer after “look at paragraph three” is not the same learning state as independently locating the evidence. A strong composition written after the tutor supplies the central idea is not the same as one the student can plan alone.
Independence should therefore be measured, not assumed.

The First 90 Seconds Are Diagnostic Gold
Before intervening, watch the learner start. Does the child reread the instruction? Underline the relevant phrase? Begin writing immediately? Freeze? Ask “Is this correct?” before finishing? Skip difficult vocabulary? These behaviours reveal the learner’s operating habits before adult support changes them.
Early tutor rescue can destroy this evidence. The learner may look more capable because the tutor supplied the missing process, while the original weak link remains hidden.
One Discriminating Question Before Reteaching
The best next question separates two plausible causes. If a child gives a weak comprehension answer, ask them to explain the paragraph orally. If the oral explanation is accurate, the problem may be output rather than understanding. If the explanation is incoherent, the tutor should move earlier in the chain.

The visible error looks like comprehension. Observation reveals a strategy habit: one familiar keyword is overriding the larger text model. The tutor’s repair is not simply to explain the answer. The learner practises reading the full relationship before selecting from familiar vocabulary cues.
Case Study: The P5 Student With Good Ideas and Weak Writing
A Primary 5 student discusses a composition prompt intelligently and tells a coherent story orally. The written draft is disorganised and grammatically unstable.
Observation prevents a common misdiagnosis. The child does not need “more creative ideas”. The main repair is output: paragraph structure, sentence architecture and a controlled editing routine that preserves the strong underlying story.
Case Study: The P6 Student Who Waits for the Tutor
A Primary 6 student understands the text and knows the relevant comprehension routine, but repeatedly looks up after each question for confirmation. Marks are acceptable in tuition; school performance is less stable.
The main issue is now independence. The tutor reduces reassurance, creates longer silent work intervals and uses delayed retests. The goal is not to teach another comprehension technique but to make the existing one self-starting.
P1–P2: Observe Access and Early Independence
For younger learners, observation should focus on instruction following, word recognition, oral language, sentence formation, willingness to attempt and the transition from spoken meaning into early writing.
Not every hesitation needs immediate correction. Children also need protected thinking time and room to settle into formal schooling.
P3–P4: Observe the Reading-to-Learn Transition

P5–P6: Observe Transfer and Prompt Dependence
Upper Primary observation should increasingly ask whether the learner can retrieve strategies without chapter labels or tutor cues, transfer corrections into later work, and maintain language control under exam-like load.
Three Students Make Observation Higher Resolution
In a three-student format, one shared task can reveal different failure layers. Two identical wrong answers may come from completely different causes. One student misunderstood the instruction; another understood everything but selected the wrong evidence. The tutor can keep a common standard while changing the intervention.
