Praise the process accurately
Generic praise such as “you are so smart” can make performance feel like a test of identity. More informative feedback names the behaviour that worked:
- “You checked the units before submitting.”
- “You changed the diagram when the first representation did not help.”
- “You asked a specific question instead of saying you could not do the whole topic.”
- “You came back to this after yesterday’s mistake and solved it without the example.”
This gives the student a reusable explanation for success.
Self-evaluation: the part many students skip
Students often move from completion directly to the next task. That creates activity without enough learning from the activity.
At the end of a task, ask three questions:
- What was I trying to do?
- What part worked or failed?
- What should I do differently next time?
This is metacognition in ordinary language. Over time, the adult should need to ask these questions less often because the learner begins asking them internally.
Planning, monitoring and evaluating in different subjects

Plan: What is the purpose, audience and central response? Monitor: Is each paragraph doing useful work? Evaluate: Does the final response still answer the task and can the reader follow it?
Mathematics
Plan: What is known, unknown and represented? Monitor: Does the answer remain plausible as the calculation proceeds? Evaluate: Are the units, magnitude and logic consistent?

Discipline changes with age
Primary 1–2: external structure is normal
Young children need more modelling, reminders and visible routines. The goal is to build predictable actions: prepare, begin, attempt, ask, check, pack away.
Primary 3–4: introduce ownership
Students can begin recording tasks, checking work and naming what they find difficult. Adults should resist correcting every small organisational failure before the child experiences it.
Primary 5–6: plan and monitor under increasing load
As PSLE approaches, students need more independence in revision planning, error review and task initiation. Parents still structure the environment, but the learner should increasingly know what is being repaired and why.
Secondary school: manage competing demands
